Registering with HelpX as a “helper”

Before registering, make sure to browse the website to see if there are hosts in your destination country and if some offer the kind of experience you’re looking for. You don’t need to register or log in to see the host listing, i.e. the ads hosts publish, organized by region and country.
Saw something cool? Register! Free members are invited to fill out their helper profile, then it’s up to the hosts to contact you directly to offer your volunteer opportunities.
To contact hosts, you must upgrade to a Premier membership.

Free membership

Free members can:
be contacted by Premier-membership hosts
see the large version of pictures hosts provided (i.e. worksite, sleeping arrangements, common areas, etc.)
see travel companion profiles (this is another HelpX service to find a travel buddy)
If you’re hoping to stick with the free membership and be contacted by hosts, fill out your full profile. This includes providing personal and contact info (name, age, email, phone number, etc.), telling the hosts about you and providing references (optional fields).
Keep in mind that the free membership offers little flexibility and you may be contacted by hosts who tend to abuse the HelpX system (e.g. running their place with a constant stream of new helpers). Search options are also limited.

Premier membership (paid)

The Premier membership upgrade is €20 for two years. You can register as a single traveller, as a couple or as two friends and the fee remains €20 for two years—sweet deal!
Premier members can:

• contact any hosts worldwide (daily email limit is applied)
• be contacted by all hosts (as long as their profile is filled out)
• use additional search options
• read and write host reviews
• create your own list of favourite hosts
• view all host photos and websites
• upload your photos to their profile
• view all available location maps
• contact other helpers through the helper companions page

If you’re serious about volunteering, the paid membership is worth considering as it’s the best way to use the service fully.
