Exciting as the trip might seem, it&#8217;s important to embark with the right preparation and attitude! <\/p>\n<h2>1. Bring enough money<\/h2>\n<p>Every destination requires WHV holders to arrive with sufficient savings. The best way to do the math is to calculate the initial amount you\u2019ll need based on your WHV plans.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario\u00a01: You plan to land in Australia, stay in Sydney for seven days then volunteer for several weeks through <a href=\"https:\/\/wwoofinternational.org\/\">WWOOF<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpx.net\/\">HelpX<\/a>. At the beginning of your stay, expenses are minimal, so arriving with the recommended AU$5000 should be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Scenario\u00a02: You plan to fly to New Zealand and buy a second-hand camper van to travel around for three months. In this case, the required amount of NZ$4200 won\u2019t cover your expenses. Camper vans are expensive. Additionally, you\u2019ll have to support yourself for three months (food, activities, gear, etc.) and pay for gas, vehicle insurance and deal with potential mechanical problems. So to be safe, double the NZ$4,200 minimum.<br \/>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<!--end accordion content-->\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<!--end ACCORDION-->\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h2>2. Don&#8217;t over romanticise your destination<\/h2>\n<p>Travel shows, friends\u2019 social media accounts and a wild imagination can make us believe that certain destinations are a complete paradise. This kind of thinking is a recipe for disappointment and it&#8217;s not uncommon for working holiday makers to be caught off guard by the harsh realities of their new environment. You can expect required funds to be enough to roughly cover 2 to 3 months of living expenses at destination, depending on your lifestyle and exact location\u2014big cities like Tokyo, Sydney or Toronto are more expensive than small towns. Purchase health insurance for your full stay abroad<\/h2>\n<p>It can\u2019t be stressed enough: buy a comprehensive insurance policy for the entire duration of your stay. With the exception of <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/japan\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/australia\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/united-kingdom\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom<\/a>, private travel insurance is a required condition for every WHV destination. It should provide coverage for medical emergencies in case of sickness (i.e. flu, tonsillitis, etc.), accidents (including hospitalisation) and repatriation. I mean, we are young and healthy, right? [\u2026] Just to be on the safe side, though, I bought insurance coverage. Well, I\u2019m glad I did. Over the course of nine months in New Zealand, I went to the hospital after falling off my bike (\u20ac170), then I had to see a doctor (\u20ac100). I was hospitalized for about ten days for an illness (\u20ac15,000) then I had to be repatriated to France for medical reasons (\u20acXXXXX). I know I\u2019m probably an exception, but as you can see, these kinds of emergencies can happen to anyone! That\u2019s when a good insurance policy comes in handy!\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Cl\u00e9ment, WHV holder in New Zealand<\/p>\n<p>For a few hundred dollars, you can purchase a <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv-insurance\/\">one-year travel insurance policy<\/a> covering emergencies. In exchange for peace of mind, this is absolutely worth it!<\/p>\n<p>Note that some insurance companies will refund the remaining months on your policy if you go home earlier than planned. For example, if you buy insurance coverage for 12 months and go home mid-year, the six remaining months will be refunded. Contact insurance companies for complete terms and conditions. Sometimes, you can only get a refund if you didn\u2019t make a claim during your stay. Globe PVT requires at least two full months left before the end of the contract to qualify for a refund.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<!--end accordion content-->\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<!--end ACCORDION-->\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h2>5. Beware of challenges if you don&#8217;t speak the language<\/h2>\n<p>First things first, know that most destinations have no official language requirements for the WHV (except <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/spain\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a>, which requires basic Spanish). Is it possible to find work and make friends in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/france\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a> without speaking French or in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/south-korea\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea<\/a> without speaking Korean? Sure it&#8217;s possible, but it will just require more patience. However, take note that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u2019ll be competing with candidates fluent in the language for the same job.<\/li>\n<li>Meaningful conversation and jokes may be lost in translation and making friends with non-English speakers could be difficult.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Up for this difficult yet rewarding challenge? Consider taking language classes when you arrive or volunteering through WWOOF, HelpX or Workaway, a popular option in Australia, New Zealand and South America. You can also sign up to be an au pair, an excellent opportunity to improve your language skills, keep expenses under control and enjoy a stipend.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to go out and meet people. Join a sports team, sign up for an activity or go to your local Meetup group. You can also participate in conversation exchanges with native speakers where you trade 30 minutes of conversation in your language for 30 minutes in a foreign language\u2014it benefits both parties and yes, you\u2019ll learn slang. Whatever you choose, don\u2019t stay alone, don\u2019t focus too much on grammatical mistakes and don\u2019t be self-conscious of your accent as long as you communicate on a daily basis.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<!--end accordion content-->\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<!--end ACCORDION-->\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h2>6. How many? How often? How long does it take for employers to fill in open positions? What are the skills required? Do you have these skills? Is your degree recognized in your destination? Is additional training required? Is your profession regulated? Do you have enough experience? Can you speak the local language well enough? Speak a foreign language on a daily basis with a roommate, a coworker or a friend.<\/li>\n<li>Always try to include locals in all social gatherings\u2014out of respect, you shouldn\u2019t speak English if someone in the group doesn\u2019t understand the language!<\/li>\n<li>Go out, meet new people and don\u2019t focus too much on your grammar or accent. After a beer or two, when you\u2019re relaxed, you\u2019ll speak more fluently and you\u2019ll understand the language as well. No, beer isn\u2019t the magic ingredient\u2014being relaxed, in a friendly atmosphere is (so it also works with coffee or a good meal!). Putting too much pressure on yourself is counterproductive. Just speak! If your interlocutor understands you, it\u2019s all good. You have a year to improve your grammar and accent. An accident can happen fast if you forget this basic fact early in the morning or late at night after a long day at work.<\/li>\n<li>Beware of scams!<\/li>\n<li>Behave.
