Something that all backpackers have in common is obviously that we all travel with\u2026 a backpack! But that\u2019s far from the only experience that unites us. <\/p>\n

This article offers a few others, and many of them should speak to you. Let’s get started! <\/p>\n

You know you’re a backpacker when: <\/p>\n

Long bus rides no longer scare you.<\/h2>\n

8 hours in a bus? No problem!<\/p>\n

You travel by night bus to save on accommodation.<\/h2>\n

Honestly the seats in a bus are sometimes more comfortable than mattresses at hostels anyway.<\/p>\n

\"Smart<\/a><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve lost count of the number of hostels that you\u2019ve stayed at.<\/h2>\n

Twenty, two hundred, two thousand\u2026 who knows? <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve waited hours on a road trying to hitchhike.<\/h2>\n

And you\u2019ve learned that the weather can be your worst enemy. <\/p>\n

You are the biggest fan of free campsites.<\/h2>\n

And you know that you have to get there early to secure a spot. <\/p>\n

And if the free campsite has bathrooms, that\u2019s a 5 star experience.<\/h2>\n

If there are toilets and showers, what more can you ask for?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve slept underneath the Milky Way<\/h2>\n

And learned to recognize the constellations. <\/p>\n

You\u2019re a pro at packing efficiently.<\/h2>\n

If there\u2019s a competition for packing your sleeping bag blindfolded and with one hand, you are the champion.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve stopped over-planning.<\/h2>\n

You might know where you\u2019ll be for the next two days, but beyond that, you have no idea. <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve met other travellers from all over the world. <\/h2>\n

And you know how to say \u201ccheers\u201d in at least ten languages. <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve gone several days before without a proper shower.<\/h2>\n

Thank heavens for wet wipes.<\/p>\n

You have a name for your car or van.<\/h2>\n

She\u2019s almost like a member of the family. <\/p>\n

You know the tastiest brands of instant noodles and granola bars.<\/h2>\n

If it\u2019s a fancier evening, to-go pizza!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You know the ins and outs of farmwork.<\/h2>\n

After telling your parents for years that you don\u2019t want to help with gardening. <\/p>\n

You know to shop for groceries in the evening<\/h2>\n

Because there are discounts on produce. <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve squatted at McDonald\u2019s for free wifi.<\/h2>\n

Perfect opportunity to download a few movies!<\/p>\n

You know how to do your laundry by hand in the sink.<\/h2>\n

Washing machines are overrated. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve accepted that the inside of your van will never look like your Pinterest board. <\/h2>\n

You don\u2019t need the bells and whistles anyway. <\/p>\n

You never know what address to put when filling out forms.<\/h2>\n

So you keep giving the address of that random hostel you stayed at a while back. <\/p>\n

Fashion is low on your list of priorities.<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s be real, we can\u2019t expect to look like superstars when our whole life is packed into one bag.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Sometimes you have insects and critters as roommates.<\/h2>\n

When you\u2019re on the road as a backpacker, sometimes the line between inside and outside is not so clear.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve become an expert in avoiding mosquito bites.<\/h2>\n

Itchy bumps and crazy rashes? Ain\u2019t nobody got time for that! <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You can fall asleep literally anywhere.<\/h2>\n

In a bus, at an airport terminal, in a packed dormitory, under the night sky\u2026 REM cycles can\u2019t stop and won\u2019t stop. <\/p>\n

Wherever you are, you know when happy hour starts.<\/h2>\n

Never late for a good time. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You\u2019re not scared of foreign administrative hurdles anymore.<\/h2>\n

For the most part anyway\u2026 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You hang a bunch of stuff on the outside of your bag to make space. <\/h2>\n

MacGyver in action!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You never know what day of the week it is.<\/h2>\n

What\u2019s the difference anyway?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Even though it\u2019s hard sometimes, you wouldn\u2019t trade these experiences for anything<\/h2>\n

Because they\u2019ve shaped who you are.<\/p>\n
