Simply put, your <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv\/france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working holiday in France<\/a> is coming to an end but you aren\u2019t quite ready to leave. The good news is that you can extend your working holiday by another 12 months if you are Canadian!<\/p>\n<p>There are two ways to apply for an extension:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#vfs\">Return to VFS Global in Canada<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#aps\">Apply at your prefecture in France<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The choice depends on your timing and personal situation, but make sure to read the <a href=\"#pros\">pros and cons<\/a> of each at the bottom of the article.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"c-notification\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-notification__text u-b0\">\n\t\t\t\tAll methods described in this article are only possible for Canadian citizens. Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/france-other-visas-after-whv\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Other options for staying in France after a Working Holiday Visa<\/a>.\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n<h2 id=\"vfs\">Option 1: Return to VFS Global in Canada<\/h2>\n<p>Canadians are eligible to apply for the Working Holiday Visa twice. If you opt for this method, simply follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/working-holiday-visa-in-france-for-canadians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same steps as your initial application<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>You will fill out the online application form and then attend your appointment at the VFS Global centre to submit everything. Your dossier will be processed by the Consulate of France. Once your application is approved, you will receive another Working Holiday Visa sticker in your passport, not an APS (<em>autorisation provisoire de s\u00e9jour,<\/em> explained below in option 2).<\/p>\n<p>The application does not have to be submitted before the expiry of your first Working Holiday Visa; <strong>there can be a break,<\/strong> long or short, between your two working holidays. Translated literally, <em>autorisation provisoire de s\u00e9jour<\/em> means temporary residence authorization. Since French administration uses very specific terms for its various permits, we will continue referring to it as the APS. Avoid using any unofficial English translations when communicating with administration as it may cause confusion about the exact permit at hand. <\/p>\n<p>The APS is a document that allows a foreign national to temporarily stay on French soil. You can apply for it even if you have a already turned <strong>36 years old<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.consulfrance.org\/Frequently-asked-questions-regarding-the-implementation-of-the-France-Canada\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>). They contain lots of practical information for various departments.  <\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t see relevant information there for your department, come back to this article and read the following general instructions. <\/p>\n<h3>General instructions for the APS application<\/h3>\n<p>Your application must be addressed to the local prefecture of your department (i.e. the administrative centre of the French department where you reside). Each prefecture operates independently. Some are by in-person appointment only, while others ask for the application to be mailed.<\/p>\n<p>Three or four months before the expiration of your visa, contact your prefecture to ask them what the application steps are. In general, you should be prepared to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your passport (photocopy)<\/li>\n<li>Your Working Holiday Visa (photocopy)<\/li>\n<li>Proof of residence dating from no longer than 6 months ago (e.g. utility bills or statement of rental insurance)<\/li>\n<li>Proof of funds equivalent to \u20ac2500 (e.g., bank statement, work contract, pay slips)<\/li>\n<li>Proof of private health insurance<\/li>\n<li>3 recent ID photographs<\/li>\n<li>If your prefecture requires it, a <em>timbre fiscal<\/em>*.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*We were informed by a working holiday maker in department 6 that he had to pay \u20ac100 for a timbre fiscal, a change concerning the APS that may be in place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isere.gouv.fr\/contenu\/telechargement\/82941\/638230\/file\/Flyer_Taxes_titres_de_sejour_usagers.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since 1 May 2026<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you live with roommates and bills don\u2019t have your name on them, your prefecture may be able to accept those of your roommate\u2019s or the landlord\u2019s along with his or her ID.<\/p>\n<p>As for health insurance, usually you can renew it one or two months prior to the end of your coverage. Don\u2019t worry, you are far from being the only one to have encountered this.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, based on our own experiences, we advise that you send by email and post (no earlier than 2 months before your WHV expiry) a letter to your prefecture explaining your situation and what exactly you require of them. You should specify that you want an APS of 12 months as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.consulfrance.org\/Foire-aux-questions-Accord-franco-canadien-relatif-a-la-mobilite-des-jeunes-PVT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Franco-Canadian accord for youth mobility<\/a>, <strong>not<\/strong> a renewal of your Working Holiday Visa. Also ask for an appointment, since it is not possible to enter the prefectural bureau without an appointment confirmation (the security agent will not let you in).<\/p>\n<p>Attach a copy of your passport and visa. Be sure to leave your contact information too. Ideally, you will be contacted via email and invited to an appointment to submit your full application.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info-wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIf you have to mail important documents, it is recommended (but not required) to opt for tracking and confirmation of delivery.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h3>The day of your appointment at the prefecture<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t be surprised if your appointment is set for just a few days before the expiration date of your Working Holiday Visa \u2013 this has been the experience of many past WHV holders.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve submitted your papers, usually the agent at the service counter will give you an <strong>application receipt<\/strong> (<em>un r\u00e9cipiss\u00e9 de d\u00e9p\u00f4t de demande<\/em>). This paper serves as proof that you are waiting for your real APS document and it gives you the same rights to live and work in France during the waiting period, even if your first Working Holiday Visa expires during this time.<\/p>\n<p>You will then either receive your APS by mail or go back to the prefecture to pick it up. The service agent will tell you which method applies.<\/p>\n<p>If in person, make sure during pick up that all the printed information is correct before leaving the service window. If you see an error, flag it right away.<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it!<br \/>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info-wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWe remind you again to remember to read <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/stories\/stories-canadians-renew-whv-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">these stories<\/a> from past Canadians who successfully obtained their APS. \n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h2 id=\"pros\">APS vs VFS: Which method is better?<\/h2>\n<p>Since there are two ways for Canadians to extend their working holiday in France, you might be wondering which way is \u201cbetter\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>As with many things, the answer is: it depends. <\/p>\n<h3>VFS advantages:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>You already know what to expect, because the steps are the same as the first time. <\/li>\n<li>VFS agents are very familiar with the Working Holiday Visa and know exactly how to process it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>VFS disadvantages: <\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is very difficult to secure an appointment at VFS. <\/li>\n<li>VFS charges an application fee.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll have to travel back to Canada. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>APS advantages:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>You can apply for it without leaving France. <\/li>\n<li>Employers are more familiar with the APS than the Working Holiday Visa, which can facilitate your job search (if applicable). <\/li>\n<li>With the APS, you will be issued a <em>num\u00e9ro d\u2019\u00e9tranger<\/em>, which can make it easier for you to <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/france-other-visas-after-whv\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">switch to another status<\/a> at the end of your second year without having to leave France.
