And then once you arrive, regular everyday life in France also has its own cost (food, accommodation, leisure etc). Let\u2019s take a look together at the setup budget and cost of living in France. <\/p>\n<h2>Pre-departure budget<\/h2>\n<p>For your WHV application, you will need to show that you have <strong>savings of at least \u20ac2500<\/strong> (or the equivalent in another currency) to support yourself upon arrival in France. If you choose to not book a return flight yet, you will need to show <em>additional<\/em> savings as proof that you can afford one later on. <\/p>\n<p>On top of the savings minimum, the following are some real expenses that you will need to plan for in the application and preparation phase: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visa fees and appointment fees: \u20ac30-100, depending on your country (it could be either the VFS Global centre or French consulate\/embassy that assesses the fee) <\/li>\n<li>Transportation to and from your nearest visa processing site (it could be VFS Global centre or French consulate\/embassy)<\/li>\n<li>Passport application or renewal: remember that your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended last day in France. So if you don\u2019t have a passport yet, or have one that is expiring too early, you will need to pay to obtain a new one. For Canadians, the cost is CA$160 for a 10 year passport. <\/li>\n<li>Private health insurance: \u20ac500-600 for one year. <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv-insurance\/\">Globe WHV<\/a> meets the requirements for France, <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/whv-insurance\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">learn more<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>Airfare: this obviously depends on your point of origin and time of travel. It was safer that way, since I didn\u2019t have a job lined up. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Youth hostels: 3 nights at The People le Marais for \u20ac114 in a mixed room (4 beds), and 2 nights at Latroupe Grand Place for \u20ac75 in a women-only room (6 beds). <\/li>\n<li>Phone plan: \u20ac19 per month via <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.free.fr\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Free Mobile<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Paris to Lille one-way train ticket: \u20ac41<\/li>\n<li>Lille to Brussels round trip train ticket: \u20ac18<\/li>\n<li>4 weeks in an Airbnb room (+1 week free): \u20ac715<\/li>\n<li>Leisure activities: ~\u20ac81<\/li>\n<li>Food: ~\u20ac200<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My total spending for the first month: <strong>around \u20ac1260. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are planning to settle down in a specific town or city (as opposed to being fully nomadic), a good option is to rent a room from an owner-occupant for 4-5 weeks, enough time for you to find and sign long term housing. Plus, it allows you to have a first trusted contact in a foreign city. <\/p>\n<h2>Monthly cost of living<\/h2>\n<p>Now let\u2019s look at the monthly cost of living in France. Expenses vary by city. To illustrate, we\u2019ll compare Paris with a smaller regional capital, Lille. Although Paris is more expensive than other cities, salaries there are usually higher as well. <\/p>\n<h3>Housing<\/h3>\n<p>In this example, let\u2019s say that you want a 32sqm place just for yourself. The averages in each city are: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris:<\/strong> \u20ac960 per month<br \/>\n<strong>Lille:<\/strong> \u20ac448 per month <\/p>\n<p>Living with roommates is usually cheaper than living alone. For example, anti food waste stores such as Chez Nous have much lower prices than a convenience supermarkets like Carrefour Express. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris:<\/strong> \u20ac50-80 per week<br \/>\n<strong>Lille:<\/strong> \u20ac40-70 per week <\/p>\n<h3>Public transportation<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately in Paris, transport passes do not offer discounts to youth (except students under 26). <\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris:<\/strong> \u20ac88.80 per month for the Navigo pass<br \/>\n<strong>Lille:<\/strong> \u20ac31.50 per month for up to 25 years old, and \u20ac63 for everyone else<\/p>\n<h3>Going out<\/h3>\n<p>This category is very relative to each person and their spending habits. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Restaurants (3 courses): \u20ac35-60<\/li>\n<li>Pint of beer: \u20ac9<\/li>\n<li>Cappuccino: \u20ac4-6<\/li>\n<li>Movie ticket: \u20ac13<\/li>\n<li>Concert: \u20ac93<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lille:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Restaurants (3 courses): \u20ac25-50<\/li>\n<li>Pint of beer: \u20ac7<\/li>\n<li>Cappuccino: \u20ac3-5<\/li>\n<li>Movie ticket: \u20ac12<\/li>\n<li>Concert: \u20ac46<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>My monthly expenses in Lille<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Housing: \u20ac590 including utilities*, living with 2 other people, in Lille proper<\/li>\n<li>Phone plan: \u20ac19<\/li>\n<li>Food: \u20ac160<\/li>\n<li>Transportation: \u20ac0. As needed, I take public transportation at \u20ac1.80 per ticket<\/li>\n<li>Going out: varies a lot from month to month and I don\u2019t keep close track of this category. Last week, I spent \u20ac24 for: an exhibition, 2 drinks, and a few coffees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"c-notification\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-notification__text u-b0\">\n\t\t\t\t*In general, this means heating, water, and electricity. In my case, it also includes internet, cleaning products, shared food products etc. Finding a rental that includes utilities will help you to better control your monthly budget.\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n<p>To summarize, there is <strong>\u20ac609 per month of fixed expenses<\/strong> (housing, subscriptions). I spend around \u20ac160 per month on food and \u20ac100 on going out. All together, my monthly spending is around <strong>\u20ac900 in Lille.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that specific figures will vary from person to person and city to city.
