We\u2019ve compiled some of Sydney\u2019s best free (or low-cost) activities to help you make the most of your time in this iconic city.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t

1. Beaches<\/h2>\n

Bondi Beach is world-renowned and is one of the most visited tourist sites in all of Australia, but there are numerous options for a beach day in Sydney. For surfing, head south to Maroubra Beach or the Cronulla area, or north to Manly and Freshwater Beaches. Gordons Bay is a great spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. The beaches around the harbour are sheltered and suitable for swimming, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. Basically, you can\u2019t go wrong with the beaches in Sydney!<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t

2. Bondi to Coogee Walk<\/h2>\n

This 6 km trail is one of the best coastal walks in Australia. You can walk directly from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach in 2-3 hours, or make a day of it by stopping at some of the connecting beaches, pools and bays along the way. In winter, you might be able to spot humpback whales migrating along the coast!<\/p>\n

3. The Rocks<\/h2>\n

The Rocks is a historic neighbourhood in Sydney, worth visiting for the cobblestone streets, sandstone architecture, and Sydney\u2019s oldest pubs! One of the biggest attractions is The Rocks Markets<\/a>, where you can pick up local art and delicacies each weekend. The Rocks also has plenty of live music and events<\/a> throughout the year, from jazz nights to running clubs and crafts workshops.<\/p>\n

4. Harbour Bridge<\/h2>\n

Walk across one of the world\u2019s most famous bridges, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From the bridge, you will be able to take epic photographs of the city and the equally-famed Opera House. If you want a more affordable version of the popular BridgeClimb, head up the Pylon Lookout for the much lower cost of AU$30 (which includes entry to the Pylon Museum, too).<\/p>\n

5. Royal Botanic Gardens<\/h2>\n

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city in the Royal Botanic Garden, a heritage-listed 30-hectare botanical garden located steps away from the Opera House and waterfront. For the best views of the harbour, take the 30-minute trail through the park to the viewpoint at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. You can sign up for guided tours<\/a> around different parts of the gardens (donations are encouraged). The gardens also double up as an event space for concerts, sports and cultural events: check what\u2019s on here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6. Ferries<\/h2>\n

Instead of splashing out on a harbour cruise, get the same panoramic views of Sydney from the water for a fraction of the price by riding the public transport ferries<\/a>. Easily tap on and off with your Opal card (or contactless debit\/credit card). You can reach many of the main tourist attractions by scenic ferry, including Luna Park, the Northern Beaches, Cockatoo Island, and Taronga Zoo.<\/p>\n

7. Live events<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve already mentioned The Rocks Markets, but there are many more free markets happening around the city\u2014though we can\u2019t be held responsible for how much you\u2019ll spend when there! Check out Paddy\u2019s Market<\/a> for souvenirs, Bondi Market<\/a> for fashion, Kings Cross Market<\/a> for organic food, or Blak Markets<\/a> for indigenous art and produce. Look up the neighbourhood you are staying in, as most suburbs run their own local market.<\/p>\n

10. Free walking tour<\/h2>\n
