There are are ways of stay in Canada that you can consider. <\/p>\n<p>Read on for an overview of the different options available to extend your stay.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#iec\">Staying in Canada with on another IEC permit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#tourist\">Staying in Canada as a tourist<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#work\">Staying in Canada on a work permit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#study\">Staying in Canada as a student<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#sowp\">Staying in Canada as the spouse of a skilled worker or student<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#pr\">Staying in Canada as a permanent resident<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"iec\">Staying in Canada with a new IEC permit<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, your IEC permit in Canada is not extendable or renewable. This is the case for all three IEC categories: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/canadian-working-holiday-permit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Working Holiday<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/young-professionals-work-permit-canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Young Professionals<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/international-co-op-internship-iec-work-permit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Co-op<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, you may be able to apply for another participation, either <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Through the normal IEC lottery if your citizenship is eligible to participate in IEC more than once, or<\/li>\n<li>Via a <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/recognized-organizations-canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recognized Organization<\/a> (RO). A participation via a RO does not count toward your IEC allowance. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We explain the different ways to get a second IEC participation in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/getting-a-second-working-holiday-permit-canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Applying for a Second IEC Permit to Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info-wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIf you are switching from one IEC permit to another, you may be able to request that your second IEC permit be mailed to your address in Canada. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/second-iec-permit-mail\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How to Receive Your Second IEC Permit by Mail<\/a>.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>You must maintain legal status in Canada at all times. If there is a gap between the end of your first IEC permit and the start of your second IEC permit, you should either leave the country or switch to a visitor record. Read on to learn more about visitor records.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tourist\">Staying in Canada as a visitor<\/h2>\n<p>If you plan to stay in Canada to travel and sightsee without working, securing an extension of your stay is easy. You just need to apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/visit-canada\/extend-stay.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visitor record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The application costs vary, starting from CA$100. The government states you should apply at least 30 days before the expiry date of your IEC permit. However, many people wait until the week before, as you lose days from your work permit if the visitor record is approved too soon.<\/p>\n<p>Online processing times vary, but once you submit your application, you can legally remain in the country after your IEC permit ends, even if you haven\u2019t received the visitor record approval yet. You just have to stop working on the day your permit expires.<\/p>\n<p>The visitor record usually lasts for six months, although this can vary depending on your citizenship. If you want to stay in Canada even longer, you can apply for a further six-month visitor record. Once you leave Canada, the visitor record becomes invalid. <\/p>\n<p>Rather than applying for a visitor record, some working holiday makers simply decide to leave Canada for a certain period of time, then return as a tourist. Be careful with this option, however. If you leave the country for too short a period, or you do not have sufficient proof that you are returning as a genuine tourist (e.g. you have ties to the country like a lease, you don\u2019t have proof of a flight home, you don\u2019t have proof of funds to cover your entire stay, etc.) the immigration officer could suspect you of returning to work illegally and refuse you entry.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"work\">Staying in Canada on a work permit<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to stay in Canada to work but don\u2019t qualify for another IEC participation, you can look into other types of work permit.<\/p>\n<p>Your employer may be able to help you apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/open-and-closed-work-permit-canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed work permit<\/a>. For example, depending on the type of employment, your employer can complete a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to prove to the government that they couldn\u2019t recruit a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and, therefore, they need to retain you as foreign labour. <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/permit-visa-going-to-canada\/5\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the LMIA is an expensive and complicated process, many people look for alternative work permits that do not require an LMIA. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/permit-visa-going-to-canada\/6\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francophone Mobility program<\/a> is an increasingly popular way of staying in Canada. You do not need an LMIA; only an eligible job offer in any province except Quebec, and proficiency in the French language.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"study\">Staying in Canada as a student<\/h2>\n<p>Another solution is to start or resume your studies. If there is apply for a study program and get accepted into a Canadian educational institution, you can obtain a study permit.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your situation (e.g. full-time or part-time studies and\/or whether your educational institution is eligible), you may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/study-canada\/work\/work-off-campus.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entitled to work<\/a> outside of your studies. As part of your study permit, you can also consider taking vocational training to train for a career.<\/p>\n<p>To obtain a study permit, you will need to prove that you have enough savings (or a guarantor) to support yourself throughout your studies. This is usually around CA$10,000 in addition to tuition fees, so it&#8217;s certainly not a cheap option.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sowp\">Staying in Canada as the spouse of a skilled worker or student<\/h2>\n<p>If you are the common-law partner or spouse of a holder of a work permit or study permit in Canada, you can obtain a spousal open work permit (SOWP) under certain conditions. <\/p>\n<p>The SOWP allows you to work for any employer without restrictions. Your permit will expire at the same time as your partner\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>To see who is eligible to apply for the SOWP, <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/permit-visa-going-to-canada\/7\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pr\">Staying in Canada as a permanent resident<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to stay in Canada long term, obtaining permanent residency is probably the best solution.<\/p>\n<p>Obtaining permanent residency in Canada will give you almost the same rights as a Canadian citizen (apart from the right to vote), and will eventually allow you to apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/dossiers\/permit-visa-going-to-canada\/10\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are several permanent residency programs in Canada. The best program for your circumstances will depend on your personal situation and the province you wish to live in.
