{"id":440777,"date":"2025-07-21T12:45:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T10:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/?p=440777"},"modified":"2025-09-26T12:52:52","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:52:52","slug":"hong-kong-id-card-whv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pvtistes.net\/en\/hong-kong-id-card-whv\/","title":{"rendered":"How to apply for a Hong Kong ID card as a Working Holiday Visa holder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone residing in Hong Kong for more than 180 days (6 months) must apply for a Hong Kong ID card upon arrival.<\/p>\n<p>This article will walk through how you can do so. <\/p>\n<h2>What is the Hong Kong ID card?<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immd.gov.hk\/eng\/services\/hkid\/general_info.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hong Kong ID card<\/a> is an identity card that all residents of Hong Kong must have.<\/p>\n<p>It is a biometric identity card that allows you to do (or simplify) various procedures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Finding a job: employers will regularly ask to see your card.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying yourself to Hong Kong authorities, such as the police.<\/li>\n<li>At immigration (if you\u2019ve left the territory), you can use the queue reserved for Hong Kong ID card holders, which significantly expedites entry into or departure from Hong Kong.<\/li>\n<li>Borrowing books from public libraries; the card can serve as a library card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your Hong Kong ID card displays all your personal information, as well as the details of your visa (validity period, visa type, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Under your date of birth, the letter C indicates that you are in Hong Kong temporarily and subject to the rules of the Immigration Department. Only after this validation can you apply for the Hong Kong ID card.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Book an appointment<\/h3>\n<p>To apply, you must book an appointment at one of the Registration of Persons Offices (ROP Offices).<\/p>\n<p>Appointments can be made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.hk\/en\/residents\/immigration\/idcard\/hkic\/bookregidcard.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immd.gov.hk\/eng\/mobile\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mobile app<\/a>, or by phone at (852) 2598 0888.<\/p>\n<p>Appointments can be scheduled up to 96 days in advance. However, since your application can only be made once your WHV has been activated, you won\u2019t be able to book that far ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Information about appointment booking can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.hk\/en\/residents\/immigration\/idcard\/hkic\/bookregidcard.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this website<\/a>. You can check appointment availability by clicking on &#8220;Enquiry to the booking status of Registration of Persons Offices&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4>List of Registration of Persons Offices:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Hong Kong Office: 8th floor of Immigration Tower, Wan Chai (probably the most convenient option)<\/li>\n<li>Kowloon Office: Government buildings in Sham Shui Po (3rd floor)<\/li>\n<li>Tseung Kwan O Office: 3rd floor of the Administration Tower<\/li>\n<li>Fo Tan Office: North of Sha Tin in the New Territories<\/li>\n<li>Tuen Mun Office: 3rd floor of the Tuen Mun Siu Lun Government Complex<\/li>\n<li>Yuen Long Office: 1st floor of the Yuen Long Government Offices (west New Territories)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll find full addresses and hours of operation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immd.gov.hk\/eng\/contactus\/person-registration.html#a\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h4>Can I apply without an appointment?<\/h4>\n<p>It is possible to go to one of the offices without an appointment, but they have a daily quota for walk-ins. These slots are typically reserved for urgent cases, so there\u2019s no guarantee you\u2019ll be served.<\/p>\n<p>If you decide to try walk-in, it\u2019s recommended to go early in the morning.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Pre-fill the application form online<\/h3>\n<p>Once you have an appointment, you must pre-fill the ID card application form online. This step can only be completed after you\u2019ve booked the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re using the mobile app, you can complete the form directly there. Otherwise, you can fill it in on this page. <\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have access to a computer, you can fill out the form at a self-service kiosk in the office.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-dossier-article__info-wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tHere&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immd.gov.hk\/pdforms\/ROP1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PDF sample<\/a> of the form that was used before the process went fully digital. It can give you an idea of what information will be required. This PDF form is <strong>no longer valid.<\/strong> Now the form must be completed and submitted electronically.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n<h3>Step 3: Your appointment at the ROP office<\/h3>\n<p>1. Upon arrival, go to the reception desk or a self-service kiosk to get a queue number.<\/p>\n<p>2. If you haven\u2019t already pre-filled the form online, you can do it now at the designated kiosks.<\/p>\n<p>3. Go to the registration counter to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide your fingerprints<\/li>\n<li>Have your photo taken<\/li>\n<li>Review your application form and sign it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Finally, you\u2019ll see an officer who will review your application and ask to see your passport. At the end of the appointment, you\u2019ll receive a receipt confirming the submission of your application. This receipt includes the date on which you can collect your ID card. This is widely accepted and poses no issue.<\/p>\n<p>Once the card is ready, you have one month to collect it from the ROP office where you submitted your application. If you fail to collect it within this time, it will be destroyed and you\u2019ll have to restart the entire process, including paying fees.<\/p>\n<h3>Collecting your card<\/h3>\n<p><em>If you applied at Immigration Tower on Hong Kong Island, go to counter 14 on the 8th floor to collect it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the counter:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Present your receipt<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019ll take your thumbprint again<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll check your information on a screen to ensure it\u2019s correct<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If everything looks good, after a short wait you\u2019ll receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Hong Kong ID card (credit card-sized)<\/li>\n<li>An information sheet explaining how to care for the card and its various uses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This entire process takes just a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The first issuance of the card is free. In case of loss, you must apply for a replacement within 30 days.
