Cover letter vs self-introduction letter

The cover letter

As with your resume, the requirements for a cover letter will depend on your situation. For part-time jobs, it may not even be required. Expectations are usually outlined in the job listing.

Which language to use

Unless you already have an excellent command of the Korean language and feel confident doing an entire interview in Korean, write your cover letter in English.

What should the cover letter contain?

In terms of content, it should be similar to cover letters in most other countries. The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself, politely address the employer, explain why you want to work for the company, and highlight your qualifications.

Be persuasive but humble, and show a genuine desire to learn and contribute.

What is the the self-introduction letter?

In Korea, there’s another document that often accompanies the CV and cover letter: the self-introduction letter or 자기소개서 (“jagi sogaeseo”). It is typically attached directly after your CV.

This is not a cover letter; it’s a personal statement meant to help the employer learn more about who you are: your background, personality, life philosophy, and goals.

This type of letter is required of Korean applicants but is not expected of foreign applicants, unless specifically requested, such as for jobs requiring advanced Korean language proficiency or in major companies.

If you’re very confident in Korean and choose to take this on, it may help your candidacy. Otherwise, there’s no need to present this optional document, especially if you’re applying to unskilled jobs or small companies.
