Formerly called the alien card, the resident card is mandatory for anyone staying longer than 90 days.
The card will serve as your ID in your day to day life and interactions. With it, you will also be able to open a bank account, get a phone plan, buy a bike, and prove to prospective employers and landlords that you are a legal resident.
The card contains the following information: name, address, residence status, date of birth, nationality, and photo. It is valid for 7 years.
Getting your resident card
It is easy to get your resident card, as it is issued directly by the immigration bureau at the airport upon your arrival in Japan for a planned stay of greater than 90 days. In the unlikely event that the airport officials are not equipped to issue your card right away, you will instead receive it by mail once you register your address at the city hall (must be done within 14 days of arrival). If this is the case, you will receive a stamp in your passport indicating that you are waiting for your resident card.
Obligations as a WHV holder
Regardless of whether you have already obtained your resident card at the airport or not, within 14 days of your initial entry, you must register your address at your city hall. The address will be printed on your resident card. Read Residence Card and changes in address for details on how to do so.
Subsequently, you must also notify your city hall or immigration of important changes to your status within 14 days. These include changes of address, name, marital status, or employment.
Lastly, you must always carry your resident card on you and be ready for random checks. If you are found without your card, you may be issued a fine.
