Starting in November of every year, Halloween decorations are taken down and replaced with Christmas ones. The holidays are truly one of the most magical periods in Europe, with enchanting Christmas markets all across the continent. It should definitely be on your bucket list if you are on a working holiday in France!

For a bit of history, Christmas markets have their roots in German traditions as Saint Nicholas markets. The first of its kind is said to be Germany’s Bautzen Wenzelsmarkt, established in 1384. Since then, this beloved Christmas tradition has spread all over Europe, and most cities have their own market now.

Strasbourg, the Capital of Christmas

You might be surprised to learn that Strasbourg is home to one of the most popular Christmas markets in all of Europe. The city is even dubbed the Capital of Christmas! The Christmas Market of Strasbourg is the oldest one in France, and for a long time was the country’s only market. For the 2024 season, it is open from November 27 to December 27.

In general, cities in eastern France (Strasbourg, Colmar, Reims, Metz) are home to some of the country’s favourite markets, probably thanks to their proximity with neighbouring Germany, where the tradition started. But don’t worry – even if you’re not able to make it out there, your city likely also has its own market and festivities.
