8Final things to remember

  • Don’t run out of fuel. Distances are enormous, especially in remote areas. Gas stations will be sparse. Fuel up whenever you come across one.
  • Be careful about A/C use. Under the desert sun, it can be tempting to blast the A/C. However, doing so significantly increases your fuel consumption. Make sure you have a generous supply of water to stay hydrated.
  • Periodically check your vehicle. Every now and then, remember to check the state of your car. How are the tyres, the oil and water levels, etc.? This is especially important before, during and after long journeys.
  • Respect the rules of the road. The rules might differ from those of your home country. Read all signs carefully and stay alert. Never forget that you must drive on the left side of the road.
  • Keep your car resale-ready. Eventually, you’ll want to resell your car, so take care of it for the next owner. Doing so consistently will be less costly than having to do one big repair and maintenance at the end of your time in Australia.
