- Arrowtown is a historic village founded in 1862 during the gold rush and is a 25-minute drive from Queenstown; you can see restored buildings and shops, learn about the Chinese community, and try panning for gold.
- Wanaka offers an outdoorsy lifestyle similar to Queenstown but more peaceful, about a 1-hour drive away; highlights include Lake Wanaka, the Wanaka tree, and the Roy’s Peak hike.
- Milford Sound is about a 3-hour drive from Queenstown; you’ll see majestic fjords with mountains, waterfalls and cliffs, and you can hike or take a boat cruise.
- Routeburn Track is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand; a 32 km hike that can be done in 2–4 days, starting in Glenorchy and linking Mount Aspiring and Fiordland national parks.
