Glenorchy
This small, quiet village offers superb hiking, horse riding and cycling. It’s a scenic 45-minute drive from Queenstown. Glenorchy also attracts fans of the Lord of the Rings and the Top of the Lake series, as you will find several filming locations there.
Arrowtown
This historic village was founded in 1862 during the gold rush. It’s only a 25-minute drive from Queenstown. You can discover buildings and shops that have been restored, and learn more about the Chinese community that made Arrowtown their home. You can also pretend to be a gold prospector by panning for gold.
Wanaka
Wanaka is renowned for a similar outdoorsy lifestyle to Queenstown, but is much more peaceful and quiet. It’s an hour’s drive from Queenstown. Highlights include Lake Wanaka, the Wanaka tree, and the Roy’s Peak hike.
Milford Sound
Located about a 3-hour drive from Queenstown, don’t miss a trip to the majestic Milford Sound glacier-filled fjords. With its mountain peaks, waterfalls and cliffs, you will be amazed by the views, whether you are hiking or taking a boat cruise.
Routeburn Track
This is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand. It is a 32 km hike that can be done in 2-4 days. The route starts in Glenorchy and links Mount Aspiring and Fiordland national parks.
