Are IEC permit holders eligible for provincial health care in Canada?

Are IEC permit holders eligible for provincial health care in Canada?

One question often asked by IEC permit holders when moving to Canada is: will I be covered by the local health insurance system? The answer depends on your exact status and on the province you live in.

Common to all IEC categories

Regardless of which IEC category you’re on (WH, YP, Co-op), IRCC states that it is mandatory to have insurance covering the following for the entire duration of your stay:

  • Medical care
  • Hospitalisation
  • Repatriation. This includes the cost of getting you to a medical facility, returning you to your home country, or returning your remains to your home country.

Which IEC permit do you have?

1. Working Holiday

As a Working Holiday permit holder, you must be covered at all times by a working holiday insurance (we recommend Globe WHV), regardless of whether or not you are eligible for provincial health insurance.

It is important to note that the length of your work permit corresponds to the length of your Working Holiday insurance policy. That means if you want to be granted a two-year permit, you must take out two years of insurance upfront. If you take out only one year of insurance, you will receive only a one-year work permit and it cannot be renewed.

2. Young Professionals or International Co-op

For holders of the International Co-op (Internship) permit, you must have a working holiday insurance.

For holders of the Young Professionals permit, you must either be covered
