Best time to visit
- May–June for icebergs
- June–August for puffins
- July–August for outdoor activities
Newfoundland is one of the only places in the world where whales and seabirds migrating north arrive simultaneously alongside icebergs floating south. If you’re lucky enough, you can see all these things at once, either via a guided tour or from viewpoints along the coastline. Although there are opportunities to spot icebergs as early as March and as late as July, the peak time to see them is late May to early June.
Another reason why people flock to Newfoundland in the spring is to see the puffins, who arrive for breeding season around early May. They will nest and breed before heading back out to sea around September. The peak time (when the breeding season is in full swing) is from June to August.
Otherwise, the main things to do in Newfoundland revolve around outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking, especially in the national parks of Gros Morne and Terra Nova. Although Newfoundland can be rainy year-round, you can avoid the worst of the cold by visiting between June and August. Travel between June and July to see blooming wildflowers, or pick the peak season of July–August for the best chance of experiencing good weather.
