6Finding accommodation in Edmonton

Now that you’ve arrived in Edmonton and are starting to find your feet, you’ll need to secure permanent housing.

Whether you plan to share an apartment or rent your own place, you can use websites such as:

You can also visit neighbourhoods you like and walk around looking for “for rent” signs.

Some Alberta-specific tips:

  • Rent varies by neighbourhood and the time of year. Because of the large number of students in the area, you can find housing shortages during term-time.
  • At the end of the university season, it is much easier to find a place to live.
  • Rent for a shared room in Edmonton is an average of $800. For a one-bedroom apartment, it can be around $1,400.
  • If you have a car or are considering buying one, ask about parking spaces when viewing apartments, as many won’t have parking included (or will include parking with an extra fee).
  • Check for good insulation, especially if heating is not included in your rent, as winter can get cold.
