Please note that, although the New Zealand authorities’ websites are very intuitive and answer almost every question you might have, they do have an unfortunate tendency to crash. If this is the case at the time of your departure, fill in the declaration directly on the application.
Step 1: visit the New Zealand Traveller Declaration website
To fill in the declaration online, visit the official New Zealand Traveller Declaration website. This process is entirely free.
Once on the website, click on “Start your declaration.”
Then confirm that you wish to start a new declaration by clicking on “New declaration”.
The authorities will inform you of the documents you will need. You can then start your declaration at the bottom of the page.
Before completing the form, you will also need to accept the privacy policy.
Step 2: fill in your general information
On this first page of the declaration, you will be asked to enter your personal details: last name, first name, e-mail address and phone number.
Step 3: fill in your passport details
Then it is time to fill in your passport details.
Once the passport has been added, you can return to your dashboard and complete your declaration at any time. This information will also be sent to you by e-mail. Click on “Add trip details” to continue.
Step 4: fill in your trip information
First, enter your arrival date in New Zealand and the flight you will be travelling on. Remember, you cannot complete the form more than 24 hours in advance. If the site cannot find your flight, don’t panic! You can fill it in manually following the error message.
Once you have filled in the general information, you can complete the rest of the declaration. This will be displayed on the website’s home page. You will find a menu with each section to fill in.
Step 5: fill in the 6 sections
Section: “Contact information”
Most of this information will be completed, but you’ll need to add a contact address in New Zealand. This could be your hostel, airbnb or wwoofing.
Section: “Purpose of travel”
Here, the authorities want to know why you are coming to New Zealand.
They will first ask you if you live in New Zealand and if you intend to stay permanently. Answer no to these 2 questions.
You will then be asked how long you wish to stay in New Zealand. This is only for general information. So it does not matter if you do not have a return date yet. If in doubt, indicate 11 months and 29 days on the declaration.
Then choose the main reason why you are in New Zealand. Select “vacation” or “other”.
You will also need to enter the last country in which you lived for 12 months or more, as well as the state and postal code.
Lastly, enter your occupation in the last box.
Section: “Immigration status”
Next, you need to select your immigration status. If you’re on a WHV or visiting New Zealand, select “I have a New Zealand temporary entry class visa.”
The authorities will then ask you for your departure and travel details. If you already have your return ticket, you can indicate your flight details and date. However, this information is optional and does not commit you to anything. You must then indicate whether you are coming to New Zealand for medical treatment, a medical consultation or to give birth, whether you have ever been expelled, deported, excluded or banned from any country, and whether you have ever been sentenced to a prison term of 12 months or more.
Section: “Travel history”
In this section, enter any country you have visited in the last 30 days. This also includes any stopovers you may have had, even if you did not leave the airport.
Section: “Biosecurity risks”
This section is probably the most important and strictest in New Zealand. It is important to declare EVERYTHING to the authorities, or risk being fined.
Section: “Restricted items”
After the biosecurity section, you will need to declare all your restricted goods. Once again, it is better to declare something “for nothing” than to declare nothing at all.
Step 6: submit your declaration
Once a section has been completed, a small “v” will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. Once all the sections have been completed, you can submit your declaration to the New Zealand authorities.
