1. What is the Working Holiday Visa?

The New Zealand Working Holiday Visa was created by the governments of the United States and New Zealand (official agreement) to encourage young Americans to travel, live, and work in New Zealand. In return, young New Zealanders can also explore the United States.

As a U.S. passport holder, you can obtain a Working Holiday Visa to New Zealand for up to 12 months. If you complete three months of seasonal work in the horticulture or viticulture industries during your stay, you may extend your visa by another three months, for a total of 15 months.

The Working Holiday Visa is an open work permit, which means you can work for any employer. However, work should not be the main purpose of your stay in New Zealand; most participants take on part-time or short-term jobs to fund their travels.

2. Eligibility criteria

The requirements are straightforward. You must:

  • Be 18–30 years old (inclusive) at the time of application
  • Hold a valid U.S. passport
  • Normally reside in the United States. To qualify, you must not have been outside your country for more than two years immediately before applying (source).

If you meet these conditions, you are eligible to apply for the program.

3. Application overview

The process is fully online and generally straightforward. However, be sure to note the following before you begin:

  • You must have at least NZ$4,200 in personal savings, plus an additional NZ$1,500 for a return flight (unless you’ve already purchased one).
  • Once approved, you must enter New Zealand within 12 months to activate your visa; otherwise, it will become invalid.

Do I have to buy travel medical insurance?

Yes. Americans on a Working Holiday Visa must have full medical insurance for the length of their stay and may be asked to provide proof. We’ve been recommending Globe WHV insurance since 2005—they’ve already covered thousands of working holiday makers around the world, including in New Zealand.

Is there a quota?

No. There’s no annual limit on the number of Working Holiday Visas available to Americans, so you can apply at any time of the year.

How do people spend their working holiday?

Every working holiday is unique! You’re in control—maybe even behind the wheel if you decide to go on a road trip. For inspiration, read these interviews with past and current participants in New Zealand.

How do I apply?
