Specified work for the Second and Third Working Holiday Visa to Australia

Specified work for the Second and Third Working Holiday Visa to Australia

Staying 2 or 3 years in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa is possible!

The information in this article applies to visa subclass 417 (Working Holiday Visa), not visa subclass 462 (Work and Holiday Visa).

Renewing your WHV: understand the basics

As you probably already know, it is possible to obtain a second Working Holiday Visa (WHV) in Australia by working at least 88 days in specific sectors and in designated regional areas during your first WHV in Australia. Likewise, it is also possible to undertake a third WHV in Australia by working at least 179 days* in specific sectors and in designated regional areas during your second WHV in Australia. These 179 days must have been completed after 1 July 2019.

*Australia specifies that these 179 days must have been completed during your second Working Holiday Visa AND/OR during the Bridging Visa you may have held between your first and second visas. If, while in Australia, you applied for your second Working Holiday Visa shortly before your first visa expired, you were automatically granted a “Bridging Visa” from the moment your first visa expired until your second visa was issued. Thanks to this Bridging Visa, you were allowed to remain in Australia and work legally. In other words, any work carried out during this interim period counts towards eligibility for the third Working Holiday Visa.

    Jobs eligible for visa renewal

You’ve probably heard about farm work, but there are other eligible sectors that are less popular among working holiday makers (such as hospitality, recovery work, etc.).

Classic sectors that count toward your second or third WHV in Australia

As a Working Holiday Visa holder (Subclass 417), you have the opportunity to renew your visa by working in specific eligible jobs. Here is a list of sectors that have historically been the most common among working holiday makers in Australia:

    • plant cultivation
    • animal farming
    • fishing
    • pearling
    • forestry
    • mining
    • construction

In general, for these jobs to be eligible for visa renewal, they must be carried out outside major Australian cities. For example, it is unlikely that a construction job would be accepted if it is based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. For the sectors listed above, positions are approved when they are located in “Regional Australia”, meaning areas where labour is particularly in demand.

However, what you may not yet know is that many other sectors have been added in recent years to the list of jobs eligible for visa renewal. Here’s everything you need to know.

    Other sectors that qualify

Australia expanded eligibility for second and third WHVs in 2020, 2021, 2022, and more recently in April 2025 following bushfires, Covid-19, floods and other natural disasters that have affected the country.

As a reminder, visa subclasses 417 and 462 are similar, but each applies to specific nationalities and their participation and renewal conditions differ depending on whether you hold a Subclass 417 visa (this applies to citizens of Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, among others) or a Subclass 462 visa (this applies to Americans, among others). This article concerns the Subclass 417 visa.

    • in food and beverage establishments (cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs, etc.),

Since 5 April 2025, new postcodes have been added to this list following recent bushfires in certain regions of Australia.
