The “Health” section enables New Zealand immigration to check whether your physical and mental condition allows you to live in New Zealand under their regulations.
You must answer the following questions:
- Do you have an illness that requires or may require dialysis?
- Do you have tuberculosis?
- Do you have cancer, heart disease or a physical, mental or intellectual disability?
- Will your current state of health require hospitalisation when you are in New Zealand?
- Will your current state of health require ongoing medical monitoring?
- Are you pregnant?
If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions
You will be asked to explain in more detail in the text bar the conditions of your illness or disability. Answering “Yes” to one of these questions will not necessarily prevent you from taking part in the New Zealand WHV, but the country’s authorities may ask you to undergo a medical examination.
Countries at risk of tuberculosis
For the last question, you must indicate whether you have lived for more than three months (combined, continuously) in one or more countries at risk of tuberculosis. To help you answer this question, New Zealand provides you with a list of countries with a low incidence of TB.
List the countries you have been to in the last five years and check whether they appear on the list provided by the embassy. If the country appears on the list, it is a country with a low risk of tuberculosis. If the country does not appear on the list, it is a country with a high risk of tuberculosis.
So:
- If you have spent more than three continuous months in one or more countries with a high risk of tuberculosis (countries that do NOT appear in the list) in the last five years, you must answer “Yes”.
- If you have not spent more than three months combined in one or more countries with a high risk of tuberculosis in the last five years, you must answer “No”.
Travelling to several countries
If you have travelled for five consecutive months to four countries (one month here, two months there, two weeks there and one and a half months there) and these four countries are at high risk of tuberculosis, you must answer “Yes”.
If, on the other hand, you have travelled for four consecutive months in three countries (one month in a high-risk country, two months in a low-risk country and then one month in a high-risk country), you should answer “No”.
If in the last five years you have not travelled for more than three consecutive months to high-risk countries, you should answer “No”. If you have travelled to high-risk countries for two months in one year and two months in the following year, you must answer “No”.
Medical examinations
If you answered “Yes” to this question, the New Zealand authorities will ask you to have a lung X-ray within 15 days to determine whether or not you have tuberculosis. An X-Ray certificate is obtained from doctors appointed by the New Zealand authorities. It is not possible to have it issued by just any doctor.
The doctor’s list is available on this page.
You should also avoid taking your medical examination if you are ill. If you have a bad cold, bronchitis or a minor respiratory infection, this could show up on the X-ray and the New Zealand authorities could ask you to undergo additional tests. In this case, wait a few days to recover before having your X-ray.
Once you have completed this section, click on “Save” then on “Next”.

Hi Pamela,
Thank you for this helpful tutorial! I sent off my application a couple of days ago but am a bit worried that I didn’t receive an email confirmation to say this. I’d previously received an email when I created a log in several months ago. Did you get a confirmation email or do you know if we’re meant to?
Thank you!
Michelle
Hi Michelle, Immigration New Zealand is not the greatest at updating people. Sometimes, people don’t even realize their visa has been approved. The best thing to do is to check your visa status on your immigration profile 🙂
Best of luck,
Pamela
Thank you so much for your reply. I got an email today saying my application has been approved. Yay!
Congratulations!!! Let the adventure begin 😀
