New Zealand is one of the WHV destinations that allow most citizenships (but not all of them!) to apply for a WHV directly in New Zealand. To do this, you must, of course, be in New Zealand with a valid status (if you’re there as a tourist, be careful not to let your NZeta expire!).
You will obtain your visa, which will take effect on the spot, without you having to leave the country to return to validate your visa (as is the case in many other countries).
If you wish to apply for a visa from New Zealand, please also consult Chapter 6 of this tutorial, as the visa application questionnaire varies slightly depending on your location.
Notes:
- You must indicate on your form that you are currently in New Zealand.
- You have two options: 1. apply for your visa outside New Zealand and imperatively wait until you have obtained your visa to travel to New Zealand OR 2. apply for your visa in New Zealand.

Hi Pamela,
Thank you for this helpful tutorial! I sent off my application a couple of days ago but am a bit worried that I didn’t receive an email confirmation to say this. I’d previously received an email when I created a log in several months ago. Did you get a confirmation email or do you know if we’re meant to?
Thank you!
Michelle
Hi Michelle, Immigration New Zealand is not the greatest at updating people. Sometimes, people don’t even realize their visa has been approved. The best thing to do is to check your visa status on your immigration profile 🙂
Best of luck,
Pamela
Thank you so much for your reply. I got an email today saying my application has been approved. Yay!
Congratulations!!! Let the adventure begin 😀
