What is International Experience Canada?

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a comprehensive program that gives young Canadians the opportunity to obtain a temporary work permit in partner countries. Depending on the destination country, Canada’s youth mobility program can consist of several categories, the most popular being the working holiday category.

1. Working holiday category

This category is for you if you don’t yet have a job offer and if you want to work (possibly for several employers, depending on your destination) or simply want to travel during your stay. This is a flexible open work permit.

2. Young professionals category

This category is for you if you have a job offer in your field of study. You can only work for one same employer for the duration of your stay. The position must also be remunerated (i.e. no unpaid internships).

3. International co-op category

This category is for you if you are a student enrolled in a higher education establishment and if an international trip is a compulsory part of your course of study. The internship must be in your field of study.
