What is ACC?
ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) is a universal protection system set up in New Zealand. This system covers accident-related damage, regardless of fault.
Who is covered by ACC?
ACC covers everyone in New Zealand, no matter their status (children, students, workers, unemployed, retired). ACC covers citizens, residents and visitors in New Zealand.
What does ACC cover
ACC covers all damage linked to an accidental cause, regardless of fault. For example:
- road accident,
- work accident,
- daily life accident,
- etc.
What does ACC pay for?
ACC covers:
- medical services (in New Zealand),
- counselling services if needed,
- physiotherapy (in New Zealand),
- loss of income (if you have worked in New Zealand),
- modification of vehicle or / and home,
- equipments following an injury,
- funeral expenses (in New Zealand).
In some cases, with ACC, you will still have to pay for part of the treatment. Emergency services are always covered by ACC.
Please note! ACC covers many situations, but it does not replace your WHV insurance, which is compulsory. We have been recommending Globe WHV since 2005. Globe PVT covers 100% of actual expenses and also covers you for situations not related to an accident (for example, in the event of illness). To find out more, see our guide What to know about travel insurance for your working holiday abroad.
What should you do in the event of an accident and/or injury?
1. Get treatment
Go to a doctor, hospital or care provider for a check-up.
2. Make a claim
The health professional will complete your claim for compensation on your behalf. ACC will pay for part of the treatment and you will have to pay the rest (unless you went to emergency).
What should you do if you forgot to mention that it was an accident and you paid for the entire treatment?
You can apply for a refund (and for the prescription medication too) within 1 year following your accident.
3. ACC will get in touch
ACC will then contact you to confirm your eligibility for treatment.
4. Receive compensation
If you need rehabilitation, equipment or salary compensation, you will need to apply for it. You can apply directly sur le site de l’ACC by creating a “My ACC” account.
