10Applying for an international driving permit
If you have a valid driver’s licence and are planning a road trip during your working holiday abroad, it may make sense to apply for an international driving permit. Indeed, your national driver’s licence may not be valid abroad past a certain period of time (and it may look very unfamiliar to local rent-a-car agencies and law enforcement officers!)
Find out if an international driving permit is mandatory or simply recommended.
Note that if your national driver’s licence isn’t in English, you can have it translated by a sworn translator in Australia and New Zealand.
In Japan, you must carry a Japanese translation issued by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) with your national driver’s licence.
The official translation option is useful in Australia, especially in the states of Queensland and Western Australia where the international driving permit stopped being accepted in 2023.
