Population in Queenstown
Queenstown is located in the Queenstown Lakes District, which also includes Wanaka, Glenorchy, Kingston, etc. The region had a population of 47,808 at the last census in 2023. According to Statistics New Zealand, almost 28,000 of them live in Queenstown (as of June 2024).
Most people living in Queenstown are New Zealanders or Europeans, but there are also around 20% who are of Asian origin, and around 5% who are Māori.
Over half of the population was born abroad, which is much higher than the national average. The average age of a Queenstown resident is only 34 years old. In short, Queenstown is a modern city that attracts young people from around the world.
