3Finding accommodation in Queenstown

Let’s not beat around the bush: finding somewhere to live in Queenstown can be difficult, and prices are high. For a one-bedroom apartment, expect to pay at least NZ$400-NZ$500 per week. For a room in a shared apartment, expect to pay around NZ$200 per week.

Unlike other cities, Trade Me is not necessarily the best site to look for ads for room vacancies. Instead, turn to local newspapers (like the Otago Daily Times and the Mirror), or hostel notice boards. Facebook also has pages dedicated to rentals (like For rent in Queenstown and Queenstown Houses to Rent). The problem is that competition can be tough, especially in winter/ski season.

So, what other solutions are available to you while you try to secure a long-term room or apartment to rent?

Youth hostels (“backpackers”)

This is the #1 type of temporary accommodation and there are a multitude of hostels available. Prices are a little higher than the rest of the island, but most hostels will allow you to do a few hours of work per day in exchange for a free dorm bed. Some hostels are huge and travellers want to party, so it’s not the quietest solution. On the other hand, you could make some incredible new friends!

Campsites

There is no free camping in Queenstown but there are plenty of paid campsites. It is not uncommon for backpackers to risk sleeping in their vans, but it’s not the best idea because it’s forbidden. If the police catch you, you will have to pay a fine.

Ask around in each caravan park, as some offer cabins/bungalows or motel-style rooms for a cheaper price than a hotel or private hostel room. It is a good compromise between a house and proper camping, as you will be warm and have a roof over your head.

For a short-term stay, head to one of the DOC campsites, such as Twelve Mile Delta or Moke Lake. They are the closest to Queenstown and cost NZ$15 per night per adult. Expect basic facilities (long drop toilets, no power, no showers, etc.).

Staff accommodation

When looking for work, keep an eye out for listings that include “staff accommodation”, i.e. shared housing reserved for employees. If you work in a ski resort or hotel, this can be common practice.
