10Making friends in Edmonton

There are not many working holiday makers in the area, so you may need to work a bit harder to meet similar people, create a network, and make friends. Even if it can be difficult to get out of your comfort zone, your move to Alberta is an opportunity to make new friends for life.

Here are some tips:

  • Work: Work will allow you to meet new people. Your co-workers can share their experiences, stories and contacts, which will allow you to develop in new sectors. You will hopefully understand the world of Canadian work better after a few months, and you may even create strong bonds with some of your co-workers.
  • Shared accommodation: There is nothing like houseshares for making easy friends, not just with your roommates, but also with their friends.
  • Sports clubs: Whether it is an individual or team sport, joining a sports club will allow you to meet people with a similar interest.
  • Take part in events: Look out for social events designed to bring together other working holiday makers and expatriates who can help each other navigate the new adventure of moving to Edmonton.
  • Dating apps: You don’t have to use dating apps just to date any more. Some apps, such as Bumble, now offer a section (Bumble BFF) for matching with potential new friends.

Patience is key, as finding a social circle can take time. However, if you make the effort, there is no doubt that you will eventually be able to surround yourself with friends.
