Q&A

Details and condition of the offer for newcomers to Canada

Your first transfer of funds to National Bank of Canada must be a bank-to-bank transfer. You cannot use a money transfer service. National Bank of Canada charges $15 to receive funds from abroad (your French or Belgian bank may also charge transfer fees).

Minimum savings of $334.92 over 3 years

You can save at least $334.92 over 3 years if you meet all the following conditions:
- Visit a branch to open a bank account and
- sign up for the Newcomers to Canada package

$334.92 savings over 3 years:
- Year 1: No flat monthly fee (save $15.95/month for 12 months)
- Year 2: A flat monthly fee of $7.98 instead of $15.95 (save $7.97/month for 12 months)
- Year 3: A flat monthly fee of $11.96 instead of $15.95 (save $3.99/month for 12 months)

The monthly fee of $15.95 for your banking package will be charged as of the fourth year. To be eligible for this savings, you must maintain the account and package for at least 36 months. You will no longer qualify for the discount if you don’t keep these products.

Maximum savings of $671.30 over 3 years

You can save up to $671.30 over 3 years if you meet all the following conditions:
- Visit a branch to open a bank account
- Sign up for the Newcomers to Canada package
- During the first year after you sign up for the Newcomers to Canada package
- Apply for and activate a qualifying personal National Bank Mastercard® credit card3
- Sign up for eStatements

During the second and third years after you sign up for the Newcomers to Canada package:
- Set up direct deposit in your National Bank account and receive your salary in the account at least once a month or
- Make at least two electronic bill payments monthly from this account.

The $671.30 savings over 3 years means the following fees will not be charged:
- The flat monthly fee for the Newcomers to Canada package for 3 years ($15.95/month for 36 months)
- The fee for your first order of cheques ($67.10/order)
- Account statements by mail free of charge for the first year ($30)
- The monthly fee of $15.95 for your banking package will be charged as of the fourth year.

Decrease of the savings
- To benefit from the full savings amount, you must maintain all those products and services and carry out the qualifying transactions for at least 36 months, unless otherwise indicated. If you don’t meet the conditions of the offer, your savings will be lower. If you don’t make your first cheque order, your savings will be lower.

Furthermore, if during any given month, you maintain your account and package but you don’t maintain one of the other products and services or if you don’t carry out the required transactions (for example if you make one bill payment instead of two), the Bank will charge you the service fee for the month. The monthly fee will be $7.98/month the second year and $11.96/month the third year. You will still benefit from a discount of $7.97/month the second year and $3.99/month the third year.

Finally, if you no longer have the account or the package you will no longer be eligible for the savings

How long does it take to receive a debit card?

Hello,
I applied online to open a BNC account and unfortunately discovered the $ 50 offer later. I have already received an email with my account number but I am still in France so the opening is not finalized.
Is it still possible to take advantage of the offer?
Thank you 🙂

Hello, I am considering opening an account at the BNC for my arrival at the end of June.
Only I go to work for 3 months in Tadoussac and there is only a Desjardins ATM.
If I have to withdraw how much is the charge please?

In advance, thank you for your answer.

Hello Elodie, the fees will then be $ 1.50 per withdrawal. Desjardins could also charge fees for the use of their ATM.

Hello,

I want to open an online bank account from abroad because I will be going to Quebec next July to do a doctorate (3 years). I am going to stay in Amos and I cannot select your branch located in this town when I register. How do I proceed? Also, I would have liked to know if it is possible to obtain a specimen check from a bank account as soon as the account is opened from abroad. I need it as soon as possible in order to be able to transfer my scholarship to my account in Quebec.

Thanks in advance for your reply and have a nice day!

Hello Ana, not all branches can be selected for opening. You just have to choose the one that is closest and we will make the change when you arrive. You will be given your specimen checks when the branch opening is finalized. I’m here if you have any further questions. ^ Fairy

Thank you for your reply. Could it be possible:
– to carry out a power of attorney so that one of my relatives present in Quebec can go to one of your branches and finalize the request in my name and thus obtain the specimen check?
– obtain the specimen check before arriving in Canada in order to be able to deposit the stock market as soon as the bank account is opened?
In addition, could you tell me what is the “value of assets” that I must declare when opening the bank account?

The opening of an account cannot be finalized by means of a power of attorney. Once your opening request has been completed, you will receive your account information which will allow you to receive a transfer. The value of assets is the amount you hold. If you have any other questions do not hesitate to send us a private message directly Ana, we are here for you. ^ Fairy

Hello, I just opened my online student bank account for Canada. I would like to have the details of obtaining the bank cards, and also to ask you if I can apply for financial assistance or a scholarship for the fall studies 2021. I am in Ivory Coast currently.
Thank you for helping me.

Hello Renaud, you can get your credit card and apply for financing when you arrive in Canada only, by going to a branch.

Hello, I was able to be part of the Newcomers program from December 2019 until June 2020. Everything was perfect, credit card, perfect customer service etc. When I return to France, I find myself with a monthly fee of $ 7 which corresponds to the monthly fee of the program (obviously, since I no longer used the bank account in Canada, no transaction was made there since I did not ‘was there more physically). I try to close it and I am told that it is necessary to be physically present in a branch (impossible for me to take a plane just to close an account …). Could someone help me? Thank you 🙂

Kimi, first of all, thank you for your testimony. In general, closing an account requires in-person identification, for security reasons. The ideal is to go to one of our branches (any one!) In order to close the account before returning to France or elsewhere.

As for the $ 7.48 fee, they correspond to the offer we made to you: if you do not subscribe to certain products and services (personal credit card, online statement, salary deposit or electronic payment of two bills per month) before the start of the second year, you still get a 50% discount on the banking package (which corresponds to $ 7.48).

Of course, given the current situation, and since I want to help you, I invite you to write to me in private so that I can give you the coordinates (email, phone) of your branch. It will be possible to close the account by making sure to validate your identity. Thank you!

^ Julien

BANK ABSOLUTELY AVOID !!

This bank does not allow you to have a Mastercard credit card.
I had to take 2 days off to go to the agency to fill out the form twice because their employee was not able to do it remotely.

After 2 weeks, I receive a letter from mastercard saying that I do not meet the criteria although I have a fairly decent salary paid on it every month in addition to the 5-digit Transfermate deposit.

In addition, you have a limit of 3000 dollars per day so impossible to buy a car in 1 day … (or you have to go to the agency during working hours, still pay for a bank check)

Fortunately, I kept my French bank. So go to RBC or TD, the customer service is much better.

Hello Sylvain. I’m sorry the experience did not live up to your expectations. Customers generally have the option of applying for a credit card directly online (https://www.bnc.ca/particuliers/cartes-credit-mastercard.html), but your presence may be required to reasons for identification. Regarding the refusal letter, I suggest you contact the number that appears therein to find out the exact reasons for such a decision. Finally, for security reasons, the limit is indeed set at $ 3000 outside per day; the purchase of a car is usually paid for by a bank draft, which can be given to you in just a few minutes at any branch.

Please do not hesitate to get back to me if you have more questions. ^ Julien

Hi Sylvain,
To buy a car, in general you can ask for a certified check in the banks and it is obtained in 10 minutes;)

Hello,

I filled the form online, no more success because you need an identification, it is for this reason that I had to go to an agency.
And the agent was not able to do better, twice!
(1 time in Toronto and 1 time in Kitchener)
As for the Mastercard number, after 30 minutes of waiting, I gave up.

I find it abnormal that it is my role to call the Mastercard service and not your agent to solve this problem?

Hello, I have two questions in order to complete the already very comprehensive information you have given:
– What is considered an “eligible transaction” in order to benefit from the $ 50 rebate?
– After making a first cash deposit in the account, can I make a transfer via TransferWise or TransferMate? Or does the first transfer, even after making a cash deposit, have to go through a financial institution?
Thanks in advance for you answers.

Hello Isabelle, an eligible transaction is any transaction that is not a bank charge.

You will be able to make a transfer from your Canadian bank account only after you arrive in Canada, the opening must be completed in person for you to be able to make a transfer. You can then use the platform of your choice.

So if I understand correctly, if I paid, for example, to top up my Opus transport card, this is considered a transaction. Thank you for your reply.

Exactly, the payment of the opus card is considered a transaction.
