11Conclusion

Whether it’s your first time travelling or you’re a seasoned backpacker, all these phases of culture shock can come and go. Sometimes it will be easier to deal with, and sometimes it takes a lot more time and strength to battle the shock. Each trip you take will change you and lead to growth in some way. Coming back home can be confronting, depending on where you are in your own personal journey.

In short, culture shock is normal but can differ for everyone. To combat it:

  • Respect your emotions.
  • Take your time.
  • Communicate what you feel.
  • Connect with others.
  • Create a bond.
  • Accept the good and the bad.
  • Enjoy the limited time you have.

Finally, remember that when it comes to culture, it’s not better or worse; it’s just different.
