Before you can start earning money in Australia, you have to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Your TFN identifies you for tax and superannuation ( “super”) purposes. You won’t need one if you’re only planning to do volunteer work.
Foreign passport holders, permanent migrants and temporary visitors should apply for the TFN online.
Your TFN will be posted to the address you gave in your application. It can take up to 28 days to receive your TFN. You must give your TFN to your employer within 28 days of starting work.
