Where do I get a birth certificate?

From Hong Kong, you can apply for a birth certificate online, in person at one of the registries or by mail to the Births and Deaths General Register Office. If you apply online or in person, you must pick up the document in person. If you apply by mail, your document will be mailed to you. To learn more about the process, read Application for Search of Birth Records and/ or a Certified Copy of a Birth Entry.

If you’re already in France, you can apply for your birth certificate online and a trusted representative can pick up the document for you in Hong Kong. The person should bring an authorization letter from you, as well as a copy of your Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document and a printout of the acknowledgement receipt. Your representative should also bring his/her Hong Kong Identity Card or passport. For more information, read Can I authorize somebody to collect the search result and / or certified copy on my behalf?

How do I get an apostille for my birth certificate?

In Hong Kong, you must bring your birth certificate to the Apostille Service Office, High Court Registry at Room LG115. Processing fee is HK$125 per document. For more information, read Court Services and Facilities.

If you’re already in France, you have to follow the certification process of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Paris or of the Chinese Consulate in Marseille. It takes about five business days (an expedited service is offered for a fee) and costs €17. To learn more, read the Formalités de certificat et de légalisation (in French or Chinese) on the website of the People’s Republic of China in France.
