Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, is the city of exploration. The city centre is refreshing and full of new secrets to discover. The city has undergone huge changes in recent years, and now is the time to explore it all.
Accessibility and budget
Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island (at least by air). The airport is served by many airlines, including Emirates, making it very accessible internationally. Domestically, it connects with many New Zealand cities at very affordable prices.
By car, Christchurch is a little more isolated than its sister cities. Kaikoura is probably the nearest place to go for tourist activities (especially those related to marine life), as is the Akaroa Peninsula, unless you prefer the plains leading to Geraldine, or, further afield, Tekapo.
Christchurch is considered a very easy place to get around with a number of different transport options including a public bus network, cycling and other car sharing options. There are two major bus networks in Christchurch, with several routes taking you to different parts of the city centre and suburbs. You can also get around the city on foot or by bike, as the terrain is fairly flat and easy to navigate.
Work and housing
Christchurch is a city in the process of rebuilding. In 2011, an earthquake devastated the city. However, this disaster has created many job opportunities, particularly in the construction industry. So if you’re a manual worker, you’ll have no trouble finding work in this sector. Christchurch is also undergoing a renaissance and attracting many tourists. The hospitality industry is also in great demand.
Finally, unlike other cities, accommodation in Christchurch is more affordable. There are many opportunities to share accommodation, as well as hostels offering very attractive long-term rents. Many hostels also offer work for a few hours a week. In return, you won’t pay any rent and you’ll have enough time to get another job.
Atmosphere and activities
The reconstruction of Christchurch is as literal as it is symbolic. In recent years, Christchurch has undergone a revival that makes the city very attractive. The city is full of little hidden spots, little surprises, pop-up stores and creative corners. It’s almost as if the damage done has given way to newness and creativity. There are also a lot of young entrepreneurs in the city and lots of small themed markets.
However, socially speaking, the city and its locals are often described as a little colder than its sisters. However, there are many local communities of expats, artists, backpackers and others. These can form rich social circles and allow newcomers to integrate into the city.
