5Cozy, indoor activities

Cozy, indoor activities

Not everybody loves winter. While you should definitely try a few of the activities and events in this article, don’t feel bad if dancing outdoors when it’s -30⁰C isn’t exactly your idea of fun or if the prospect of hitting the trails on a snowy day makes you wish you had picked a warmer destination.

Don’t worry, there are other fun things to do in winter, including indoors because many Canadians are just like you—they choose heat and a cozy atmosphere over cold and the great outdoors!

Going to the movies, exploring shopping malls, and eating out are perfectly acceptable options to keep you busy during a snowstorm. Adopting the Danish “hygge” lifestyle works too—it involves creating a cozy environment at home and watching Netflix in the warmest pyjamas!

Here are a few other ideas.

Rent a cottage

Renting a Canadian cottage for a weekend with friends or a getaway with your partner can be a great way to enjoy lovely winter scenery in a comfortable setting. Start the fireplace, put a few beers in the fridge, cook your favourite meal and maybe consider a walk, a snowball fight or a snowmen contest!

Relax in a Nordic spa

Nordic spas are very popular in Canada and they tend to be more accessible than the classic, fancier version in five-star hotels. These spas are typically located just outside city limits, in forests or other picturesque settings. Yes, you will be outside—that’s the point of the experience!—but soaking your tired muscles in 40 °C water when it’s -15 °C leaves you feeling rejuvenated and quite proud of yourself.

Most spas also offer the whole cold-hot combo with river baths (brr!) followed by sauna or steam-bath sessions.

Nordic spas are usually affordable if you don’t add a massage or other kinds of treatments, as you will only pay for the entrance fee.

Make the most of the poutine-beer combo

Nothing beats some greasy poutine and a beer in a sports bar for a lively evening—this is best enjoyed with friends!
