Good evening,

I just register on this site only to share with you the (more than) deplorable experience that I suffered because of this bank.

First of all, be aware that BNC branches are only open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. Some advisers receive in the evening but the counters are closed after 3 p.m. You will see in a moment that this is the heart of the problem.

After discovering the offer on the PVTistes website, I opened my account from France. A few days before my departure, I transfer funds to my future Canadian account, the process being fully explained. The day after my arrival, a Thursday evening, meet with my advisor to finalize the opening of my account. Until then, the dream route!

Unfortunately, the advisor in question forgot to tell me that the temporary code he provided with the credit card, during the appointment, is only valid for 30 mins. When I want to activate my card, this time credit is used up. My card is blocked!
After losing more than an hour on the phone with an agent who does not understand my problem (I want a second temporary code), I finally understand that I will have to go to a bank counter to have it (between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays, not the weekends you follow?), While it is Friday evening!

But ... As of Monday, I'm working! Practice not? It will be impossible for me to return to the bank!

Thanks to the kindness of a colleague and the understanding of my boss, here I am at the bank the following Tuesday. (Loss of 4 days already). The reception counselor solves my problem in a few seconds, I activate my card and there ...
Surprise!

Withdrawals are impossible!
Payments are impossible!
As I will discover a few hours later, Interac transfers are also impossible!
(I pass over in silence that for 4 days, I also try to obtain a Canadian RIB which carries my Canadian address and not my French address, mistakes included ...)

As soon as this is discovered, I call, I email, I tweet! We are now 9 days after opening my account and ...
I have an unusable debit card, inaccessible funds and a deafening silence at the end of the phone / mail ...
If only I were a unique case ... Alas not. Two colleagues (a French and a Mexican) are / were in a similar situation. The French took more than 17 days to be able to access their funds at the BNC!

On the strength of this (very) bad experience, I will happily share our story with the approval of my 2 colleagues, in order to invite you NOT TO ESPECIALLY trust this bank. The offer is undoubtedly attractive but the reality is absolutely terrible.

I just hope that the BNC will have left less bad memories for others! By then, I hope to be able to recover my funds and place them on the other bank account that I was able to open (in 1 hour) with the competitor. He even allows me to spend dollars that I don't have yet!
Good luck to all who come to Canada!

PS: You will no doubt see this story on the web several times. At the time of this message, the BNC sequesters more than $ 5,000 on my account and I do not intend to let them act with impunity, so I will continue to share my mishap everywhere. I am fortunate to be very well surrounded, which allowed me not to end up too embarrassed while waiting for my first salary ... But that will probably not be the case for everyone.

Hello! It’s Souad from the National Bank of Canada.

I have just read your message, I put myself in your place and I am very sorry for the last experiences you had with us. Clearly, this situation does not reflect the quality service we offer to our customers, even less for a new foreign customer like you.

I would like to clarify a few points:

1- Not all of our branches are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hours differ from one place to another, similar to the counters. I invite you to consult our timetables here: https://localisateur.bnc.ca/#.
2- I sent the message regarding the time limit for the temporary code for the credit card to our teams to ensure that other customers do not find themselves in an identical situation.
It is often said that the first is often the right one. But I would like to change your opinion about our services. I invite you to get in touch directly with the branch manager of your agency who will resolve the whole situation, if it has not already been done.

Thank you!

Good evening Elrrith,

I am quite surprised but also shocked by your comment.

Already shocked because some of your information is wrong, especially in terms of schedules. So before giving incorrect information, I advise you to check your sources.

I opened my BNC account remotely and everything went really well. The day after my arrival in Montreal, I had a great advisor, opening an account with a debit card and signing documents for a credit card without even being asked for a credit history unlike other banks . My super advisor took the time to explain the Canadian banking system and all the advantages to which I was entitled thanks to my newcomer account. Especially since this offer is very widespread given the number of newcomers to Canada.

In terms of customer service, here too I am quite skeptical of your comment. Whenever I have had to contact them with various questions, they have always taken the time to explain things to me well and above all, they have been very patient.

If not for the unique case, between the millions of customers and 3 people in Canada including 2 French eh you’ll apologize.

I'm sorry for your bad experience but if I can give you some advice, don't thank me, that makes me happy; =), go take advantage of the sun, the temperatures, your new life in Montreal and above all leave your French side grumpy very close !!!!

Peace,

Good evening Siem,

Quickly.
I'm not in Montreal.
I have checked the timetables (and I confirm the time range from 10h - 15h for receptionists).
I confirm to you (telephone support) that none of my conversations with BNC customer service lasted less than 41 mins, including easily 25 to 30 mins of waiting.
I got everything I needed (in 17 days ...).
I really enjoyed the good weather, the sun but not yet the beach, it will come.
As for hearing me moan ... It is indeed an exceptional fact. I never complain, it's a waste of time and energy. If I have reached such extremes, it is because I was in a difficult situation, because of a service which was unreliable.

Now everything is settled and I am very happy.

Good evening SouadO,

The agency director finally took charge of the situation and everything was settled in the morning.
I cumulated, according to her, the entirety of all the problems:
- An advisor who did not know that the activation code was only valid for 30 mins (!)
- A person (we still don't know which one) blocked all movements on my account (withdrawals / interac / payments) for an unknown reason.
- A delay in recording the procedure meant that my credit card arrived more than 10 days late on the estimated date.

In short, I literally played bad luck.

In my defense, now everything is working perfectly. The advisers of the agency in question are obviously up to date on the somewhat special situation of new arrivals.
I am not ready to recommend the BNC but not ready to leave it. (When we see the em * rds at the Caisse D. ...)

Thank you for your message.

Hello !

I was wondering, is it possible to make the first transfer from an online bank (Boursorama Banque more precisely)? In the conditions of the offer, they specify "from bank to bank" ...

Thank you for your reply !

Hello, do we need a NAS code to open an account at the BNC?

Hi Gabriel, the SIN is requested by the banks when you open a credit card account. With a debit card only, it is not mandatory. But for the pre-opening of online account from France or Belgium, no need for the SIN :)

Hello, where to find the list of documents to provide to open the account from abroad? In some bank you have to go to Paris for an embassy stamp and everything: /

Hi Guillaume, do not hesitate to start filling out the form and then you will have more information, but normally it is not complicated, they have authorized the opening of a remote account to make your life easier so they do not not ask you to go to the embassy;)

English-speaking forums seem to advise BNC exclusively for Quebec, recalling that it is not a bank so common in the rest of the country; Do Pvtists outside Quebec have another preference :)?

Hello Anaïs,
The BNC answered me this for you: "Yes, the offer allows you to have a credit card before having a job. This is to better assist you in the management of your transactions and allow you to build your credit history. "

Hello Anaïs, yes you can have one directly. You just need to have a Canadian phone number to be able to link it to your card. If you don't have one then no card.
