If you want to study in Canada for six months or more, you will need to enrol in a course with a designated learning institution and apply for a study permit.
If you are planning on bringing your family to Canada while you study, make sure you read our guide to travelling as a couple and/or with kids.
What you can study in Canada
As well as academic studies, you can also complete vocational and professional training to learn a trade.
In Toronto and Vancouver
International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC) offers English language courses, plus vocational programs (business, sales, communication, etc.) and opportunities for Canadian work experience. You have the option to take classes at ILAC and live with a Canadian homestay, or stay in a student residence.

In Montreal
Atpal Languages, located in downtown Montreal, offers a range of courses for everyone to help improve your French or English skills.

Staying in Canada after your studies with a post-graduation work permit (PGWP)
If you have graduated from a designated learning institution in Canada, you can obtain an open work permit (non-employer-related) called a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), once you have completed your studies. The PGWP application must be submitted within 180 days of completing your studies.
Important: In 2024, Canada changed the criteria for accessing the PGWP, making them more restrictive. See Work in Canada after you graduate: Who can apply for more information.
A PGWP can be valid anywhere between eight months and three years. The length of your PGWP will depend on the length of your study program (unless you’ve graduated with a master’s degree).
