The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) is one of the most common types of closed work permits, especially when you want to stay longer in Canada after your IEC permit comes to an end. If you have found an employer willing to take the required steps, you may be able to apply for the TFWP after IEC. The TFWP can also be obtained without a prior stay in Canada, if you receive an eligible job offer in Canada.
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) must be filed with the Canadian authorities by the employer at a cost of CA$1,000. The authorities will determine whether you meet a need in the Canadian labour market that cannot be filled by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Your employer must prove that your position has been offered to as many people as possible (online job advertisements, etc.) and that they have not found anyone else suitable to fill the position.
A work permit under the TFWP can be renewed several times (up to a total of four years maximum). Note that if you wish to move to Quebec with this type of work permit, you must also obtain a Quebec Certificate of Acceptance.
To apply for a work permit under the TFWP, go to the Government of Canada website.
