You must buy health insurance coverage for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. Otherwise, the permit issued at the border will only be issued for the length of the policy term. For instance, if you are entitled to a 24-month permit and you only buy a 12-month insurance policy, the border services officer will issue a 12-month permit. You won’t be able to extend your permit even if you buy more insurance at a later date.
Always review the terms and conditions of your insurance policy. The amount of risk or liability covered varies greatly from plan to plan and it’s important to take note of exclusions.
