Do I really need to buy health insurance?
Yes, it is mandatory for all IEC work permit holders (Working Holiday, International Co-op and Young Professionals). Your policy must cover medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation and be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada.
If f you don’t have proof of health insurance, the border services officer may refuse to issue your work permit. And if your insurance policy is valid for less time than your expected stay in Canada, you may be issued a work permit that expires at the same time as your insurance.
Even if your employer offers benefits or if you have a valid province health card, you must have your own insurance policy—Canadian health insurance doesn’t cover repatriation. For official info on this, read Health insurance.
