You don’t need to be one of the very first people to enter the pool. What matters if you want to maximize the number of draws you’re eligible for is entering the pool before the first round of invitations.

However, selection is random. Someone who enters the pool as soon as it opens could go through the entire 2027 season without receiving an invitation, while someone who enters in March 2027 could be invited the following week.

Having a job offer or an employer willing to hire you in Canada does not give you priority in Working Holiday draws.

If you already have a specific job lined up in Canada, another IEC category may be more suitable, such as Young Professionals, provided your citizenship makes you eligible.

At the pool stage, you’ll need your passport.

If you later receive an Invitation to Apply, you’ll need to submit a more complete application and provide several documents, including a résumé/CV, a copy of your passport and a photo. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to undergo a medical exam and/or provide police certificates.

There is no guaranteed waiting time for an invitation. You could receive one quickly, wait several months, or never receive one during the season.

Once you’ve been invited and have submitted a complete application, processing times vary depending on how many applications the Canadian authorities are handling at the time.

At the beginning and end of the season, some candidates receive a decision within just a few days after providing their biometrics. Following several large rounds of invitations, waiting times of around 3 to 8 weeks are not unusual.

If you receive an invitation, submit your application and it is approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. You generally have up to 12 months to use it to enter Canada and activate your work permit.
