Make the most of patio weather and discover the tradition of BBQ
Patios are a sure sign summer is around the corner. After months of booking tables inside—and as far as possible from the door to avoid a potentially chilly breeze!—, Canadians finally get the chance to enjoy a cold beer and a plate of nachos on a pub patio, a fancy lemonade in a park, a glass of champagne on the rooftop of a trendy venue, a farm-to-table brunch in a quiet backyard and more.
Winter is a long season and as soon as it’s warm enough, it’s a relief to finally eat, drink and socialize outside—just join the fun!
Get into BBQ season
Canadians grill up juicy cuts, corn and veggies with such enthusiasm that you’ll see people hosting BBQ parties in their garages in the middle of winter. Obviously, it’s safer and more enjoyable outdoors, and summer is the perfect season to get started on the fine art of BBQing.
Cooking with fire is very versatile. You can grill whatever you like, from meat (pork chops, sausage, skewers) to veggies (asparagus, bell peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, etc.).
No need to invest in a fancy BBQ—a camping grill or a small portable propane grill can do the job just as well, and they are great for balcony grilling (not everyone has a big backyard!).
Make your own s’mores
Not familiar with s’mores? This is a traditional summer camp treat in Canada and the US, and the recipe is super simple.
You’ll need graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars. Take one large graham cracker and break it in half (one for the top, one for the bottom cracker). Place a piece of chocolate on one half to fit the graham cracker. Put a marshmallow on a stick and hold it over the fire until roasted and slightly golden brown. Place on the other cracker, then assemble, pressing both cracker halves together. The hot marshmallow will melt the chocolate and leave you asking for… some more, hence the name s’more!
