A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a unique nine-digit number that identifies Canadian citizens, permanent residents and temporary residents when they apply for benefits and services from government programs. It’s also used for tax reporting purposes, so you will need to provide it to your employer within three days of when you start working.
Applying for a SIN is a straightforward and mandatory step if you want to work during your IEC adventure in Canada.
So, who in your family needs one?
- Working Holiday, Young Professionals, International Co-op permit holders who plan to work in Canada need one, and so do work permit holders in general (i.e. if your spouse or common-law partner gets an open work permit).
- Kids don’t need to apply for a SIN unless you open an interest-bearing bank account for them. In this case only, a SIN is required, so the bank can report the interest income to the government.
