4How about… Calgary (Alberta)?

How about… Calgary (Alberta)?

ville Calgary Canada

Never heard of Calgary? Alberta’s biggest city is also Canada’s third-largest city with a population of 1,306,784. “Cowtown” isn’t as rural as its nickname suggests, but Alberta does have a Texas feel with a wild western culture and a world-famous annual stampede.

Why should I go to Calgary?

  • Calgary is often considered one of the most livable cities in the world. In 2022, it scored 95 for stability, 100 for healthcare, 90 for culture and environment, 100 for education, and 100 for infrastructure.
  • It’s also the sunniest city in Canada with over 300 days of sun per year (we’re not saying it’s hot, though!)
  • Calgary is a treat if you love wide-open spaces and nature because of its proximity to the Rocky Mountains. It also boasts a number of breathtaking turquoise lakes perfect for swimming in summer and skating in winter.
  • It’s the perfect destination for all outdoor sports enthusiasts.
  • The main language is English.
  • Calgary is a big, cosmopolitan city where you won’t stand out.
  • Folks in Alberta have a reputation for being very warm and friendly.
  • Speaking French may be an asset on your resume because there are far fewer French speakers in this part of the country.

Just keep in mind that…

  • Calgary is sunny but winters are very cold. On the other hand, the climate is drier than in the east, which makes below-zero temperatures more bearable.
  • Life mostly revolves around nature and outdoor sports, with less room for cultural activities.
  • Calgary is laid-back and relaxed, so not a fast-paced city with a super fun nightlife.
  • Public transportation is limited and doesn’t run all night. Life is much easier if you have access to a car, especially true if you want to explore the surrounding area.
  • The cost of living in Calgary is relatively high, both in terms of housing prices and daily expenses.
  • There are no or fewer direct flights between many parts of the world and Calgary, so expect a stopover and higher airfares.
