Never heard of Calgary? Alberta’s biggest city is also Canada’s third most populous city with a population of more than 1.3 million. “Cowtown” isn’t as rural as its nickname suggests, but Alberta does have a wild west feel and even a world-famous annual stampede.

• Calgary is a treat if you love wide-open spaces and nature because of its proximity to the Rocky Mountains. It also boasts a number of breathtaking turquoise lakes perfect for swimming in summer and skating in winter.
• It’s the perfect destination for all outdoor sports enthusiasts.
• Calgary is a big, cosmopolitan city where you won’t stand out.
• Folks in Alberta have a reputation for being very warm and friendly.

Just keep in mind that…

• Calgary is sunny but winters are very cold. On the other hand, the climate is less humid than in the east, which makes below-zero temperatures more bearable.
• Life mostly revolves around nature and outdoor sports, with less focus on cultural activities.
• Calgary is laid-back and relaxed, so not a fast-paced city with a super fun nightlife.
• Public transportation is limited. Life is much easier if you have access to a car, especially true if you want to explore the surrounding area.
• The cost of living in Calgary is relatively high, both in terms of housing prices and daily expenses.
• There are fewer direct flights to and from Calgary compared to major hubs like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, so expect a stopover and higher airfares.
