How about… Ottawa (Ontario)?
Canada’s national capital is between Montreal and Toronto, and offers a bilingual environment, several iconic attractions (including the longest skating rink in the world!), great museums and interesting work opportunities.
Why should I go to Ottawa?
- The national capital has a family-friendly, small-town feel. It’s a great option for backpackers who are looking for an urban atmosphere without the hustle and bustle of Montreal or Toronto.
- Ottawa is one of Canada’s most bilingual cities and almost a third of the population speaks French at home. It’s a great compromise if you want to work on your language skills—English, French or both!
- The city isn’t on the backpack trail, so there may be less competition in the job market.
- Ottawa is a pretty city with many historical places to explore—Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, Rideau Hall, etc.
- It’s ideally located between Montreal and Toronto, and the province of Quebec is minutes away, just across the Ottawa River.
Just keep in mind that…
- It’s a vibrant city but there are fewer cultural activities and events than in Montreal or Toronto.
- Ottawa is more expensive than Montreal or Quebec City.
- The federal government dominates the job market, and securing a contract with the public sector can be complicated for temporary residents (security clearance, experience required, long hiring process, etc.).
- There are remarkably few direct flights to international destinations (except to “sun destinations” in winter), so expect a stopover in Montreal or Toronto.
