March 18, 2009 02:35 PM - Mention Zidane, Barthez, Vieri (without benefit of first names), and any soccer fan worth his salt knows exactly whom you’re talking about.

Those aficionados of what's often called “the beautiful game” will get an opportunity to see the stars right here in Mississauga.
Zinedine Zidane, Fabien Barthez, Christian Vieri and other international players are setting up camp at Hershey SportZone this summer to train for a series of charity matches in Canada.
The Toronto game goes June 26 at BMO Field, and the others will be played in Montreal and Vancouver.

Organizer Anthony Huie, past-president of the Toronto Soccer Association and a longtime Mississauga resident, sees the event as a triple whammy.
“One, it’s a wonderful opportunity for local soccer fans to see these great players in action. Two, part of the proceeds from the match is going to the Zidane Foundation, which is a children’s charity. And, three, while they’re here, Zidane, Barthez and Vieri will be scouting for young Canadian talent,” said Huie. “All three are very influential in their countries and have contacts with European clubs. If they say, ‘I like this person,’ that’s a huge endorsement.”

The event will pit Zidane’s team, comprised of international players, against a Canadian all-star squad. There’s a call out for players and so far there’s plenty of interest, says Huie. A selection committee is being formed.
“Imagine getting an opportunity to play against Zidane and company. I’ve been getting inquiries from all over the country from players who want to participate,” said Huie.

In addition to donning Canada’s colours, six under-21 players will suit up alongside Zidane. There are also plans to take a youth squad to Europe for a year’s training following the tour.
“If you really want to improve your game, it helps to train in soccer hotbeds such as Europe and South America,” said Huie.
Also in the works are several showcase games between youth teams. Huie is arranging for one to be played at Hershey SportZone, and another will precede the BMO match. The person making all this happen, says Huie, is Ahcene Adlani of Vancouver-based Adlani Soccer Ltd.
Ticket and game information will be available Friday (March 20) at www.riversideworldwide.com.

Zidane, 36, helped France to championships at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000, but ended his career at the 2006 World Cup final in Germany by being sent off for head-butting Italy defender Marco Materazzi in the Azzurri’s penalty-kick victory.

Barthez, 37, manned goal for Manchester United of the English Premier League and the French national team, with whom he also won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 and reached the final of the 2006 World Cup.
Vieri, 35, has 23 goals in 49 matches for Italy and played for his country at the 1998 World Cup, scoring five times, and the 2002 World Cup, scoring four times.
