Go camping, explore national parks and enjoy outdoors activities
Canada is the perfect country to try many outdoor activities. You’re bound to find what fits you best, whether you’re looking for wild adventures or urban experiences, an adrenaline rush or less strenuous fun—beach bumming, hiking, golfing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, windsurfing, jet skiing, rafting, kitesurfing, waterskiing and more are available in many corners of Canada.
Try camping or glamping
Camping is Canada’s favourite pastime for many good reasons, including the chance to spot all kinds of animals in the wild, appreciate diverse landscapes and gaze at the stars!
There are usually two kinds of campers. The first kind tends to rough it, pitching a tent anywhere allowed after a long day canoeing to get to the best spot. The second kind is more into “glamping” and enjoys a bit more comfort—they drive a van or an RV and sleep in cottages or “ready-to-camp” tents.
There are both private (independent or managed by hospitality chains) and public campgrounds (in national, provincial, and territorial parks, sometimes in small towns as well).
Here are a few links for campgrounds in each province and territory:
- Quebec
- Ontario
- British-Colombia
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- Nova Scotia
- Saskatchewan
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Prince-Edouard Island
- Yukon
Keep in mind that you’ll need a plan to prevent annoying and potentially dangerous interactions with local fauna, from bears to mosquitoes. Read our article on Canadian fauna for more information.
Explore national, provincial and territorial parks and enjoy outdoor activities
All kinds of activities are available year-round, including kayaking and canoeing. In fact, you’ll probably notice many vehicles leaving the city with a canoe or kayak strapped to the roof, especially ahead of a long weekend. Canadians love planning paddling adventures on lakes, rivers, and even at sea. This is the best water sport to explore the wild side of Canada and maybe see marine mammals in their natural environment.
Ever heard of canocrossing or canihiking? This is the summer version of dog sledding—imagine hiking with a dog pulling in front. Many providers offer summer outdoor activities for dog lovers, ask around!
