Applying for a Working Holiday to France with a Canadian passport.

I would like to know .... once the visa is granted, am I able to arrive in France as a tourist first (before the start date of the Working Holiday visa) and then stay in French territory until the visa starts its period of validity? Is this ok and legal? I am assuming it is but just want to make sure!

Example:

Date of arrival to France: June 13 2025 with Canadian passport

WHVisa validity: 1 July 2025- 1 July 2026

As a second part to my question:
Do I need to transform the visa into a residence permit upon arrival in France?
Can I start working as soon as the visa becomes valid? or is there a procedure before I can be hired?

Hi romar. I don't know if it is legal, but personally I waited until my WHV to start before entering. If you want to arrive early, you can always ask the customs agent if you are required to leave and re-enter Schengen when your WHV starts, to change status.

For your second question, there are no further administrative procedures to do upon arrival. Read this guide for details Key documents and procedures for starting a job in France (WHV holders)

And btw if you book an Air Canada flight using the pvtistes partnership link, you can get 2 free checked bags instead of 1. Air Canada: airfare between Canada and France with 2 free checked bags

    Hey Jackson,

    Thanks for the help.

Do you know if it is necessary to present a return ticket upon arrival as a tourist?
It seems like entering as a tourist first and waiting for the WHV is the best way to organize my trip right now. But I don't want to risk any problems...

It shouldn't be an issue for France customs, but normally during flight check-in the airline will ask to see a return ticket, though it's not a universal rule. If you explain that you have a long-stay visa starting soon, they should understand. The airline might also ask you why you're flying before the start of your visa so you need to be prepared to answer that.
