My Working Holiday Travel Plan in South Korea

1. Initial Arrival and Settling in Daegu

Days 1-7: Arrival and Orientation (August 9 - August 15)

• Day 1 (August 9): Arrive in South Korea (via Incheon International Airport) and travel to Daegu.
• Days 2-3 (August 10-11): Settle into my apartment in Daegu, explore the local neighborhood, and locate essential services (supermarkets, healthcare, banks).
• Days 4-7 (August 12-15): Visit the Daegu Immigration Office to finalize visa requirements, register for an Alien Registration Card (ARC), and get a Korean SIM card.

2. Exploring Daegu

Days 8-14: Discover Daegu (August 16 - August 22)

• Day 8: Visit Dongseongno Street for shopping and dining.
• Day 9: Explore Daegu's historical sites like Seomun Market and the Daegu Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine.
• Day 10: Hike up Apsan Mountain and enjoy the panoramic views of the city.
• Day 11: Visit Daegu Arboretum and Duryu Park.
• Day 12: Take a day trip to Palgongsan Mountain to visit Donghwasa Temple.

I will be staying in Seoul for one year and planning to work part-time around 15h to 20h per week. Though I will be based in Seoul for most of my stay, I am planning to travel back and forth to other cities too with the goal of immersing myself in the Korean culture and explore the country.

- For the first month of my arrival, I am planning to stay in a hostel as a Workawayer and will use this time being hosted in exchange of services such as maintenance of the place or language exchange to look for a job and meet new people.

Oui, tu peux tout à fait faire ça. Tu dois déclarer le changement d'adresse si tu quittes un logement fixe pour un autre, mais si tu as un logement principal et que tu visites la Corée tout en gardant ce logement, tu n'as pas besoin de déclarer les autres adresses car elles ne seront pas ton adresse principale.

Bonjour, j'ai une question un peu du même style que Nannen, mais il est dit que sur le formulaire de demande de visa on doit obligatoirement indiquer une adresse et numéro de tel coréen. Doit on mettre l'adresse où on va rester les premiers mois ?

Oui, tu peux mettre sur le formulaire ton adresse d'arrivée même si c'est un hôtel ou une auberge pour quelques jours seulement.

Ton plan me parait très bien ! Juste une chose, les retours récents indiquent qu'il ne faut pas mentionner le baby-sitting dans les projets de travail, donc je pense que c'est mieux que tu le retires au cas où.

Je changerai un peu la mise en page afin qu'il ne soit pas exactement similaire au tien si tu le souhaites.

Il est très bien, tu donnes assez de détails, tu prévois de pas mal visiter donc c'est top.

Peut-être enlever la mention du petit voyage au Japon, même si ce n'est qu'un jour. Je sais pas s'ils aiment qu'on mentionne qu'on prévoit de visiter d'autres pays (même si le PVT est parfait pour ça). Dans le doute, je me dis que tu peux peut-être l'omettre.

PROGRAM (detailed activity plan)
My accommodation (in all the destinations mentioned below) would be in local neighborhoods for a better integration and understanding of the culture and daily life in the country, ideally in a host family. I do not plan to work more than 20 hours per week, doing odd jobs such as babysitting, waiter in a cafe, barmaid and if possible fulfilling missions (volunteer or short-term) in the tourism field which is my university field of study, only to meet my needs during the stay.
I chose to apply for a PVT in South Korea because I am a traveler passionate about culture and I would like to learn more about Korean culture from the inside (like tasting a wide range of traditional dishes that are unknown and on a local scale), so a year would be perfect for that.

Thanks to the Hellotalk application, I met several people who agreed to host me for a few weeks in the different regions (or nearby) in exchange for some services such as house maintenance for example where I planned to go.
I will use Indeed, Koreabridge, Overseas Korean agencies, etc.

PROGRAM OF MY PVT IN SOUTH KOREA
September > Seoul
• first month in Seoul discovering the capital - always an essential step of a trip - to acclimatize and immerse myself in/in life at the Korean pace and the country's gastronomy while carrying out administrative tasks such as my registration with the Immigration Office correlated with obtaining my Residence Card. This will also allow me a good introduction to continue learning the basics of Korean and in particular its alphabet (hangeul) started in France
• attend the Andong Mask Dance Festival (28-29/09) then visit the region and discover traditional Korea as well as a part of Andong's cultural heritage listed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the beginning of October

October > festival season
Travel across the country to discover festivals and fall foliage. No accommodation in a single city at this time (guesthouse or airbnb preferred).
• first days of October in the Andong region (see September program above)
• Suwon Hwaseong Culture Festival on October 4th and 6th interspersed with a day in Seoul (nearby) on October 5th to enjoy the fireworks festival and its related activities (concerts by Korean artists in particular)
• flight to Jeju and the Tamna Cultural Festival with a first discovery of Jeju Island under its autumn foliage (07-11/10)
• World Gimseng Festival in Geumsam (12-13/10)
• Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival with its lanterns and fireworks at nightfall > visit the surroundings of the city and schedule future visits in spring (see below / October 14-18)
• Yeoju Ogoknaru Festival to discover the country's ancestral agricultural culture (19-20/10)
• end of the month (21-31/10) and early November to discover the South Chuncheong region with the highlight of the Autumn Flower Festival in Taean

November > go in search of new spaces with autumn colors with a month full of hiking focused on discovering the country's natural heritage.
• early month = end of the visit to the South Chuncheong region & brief one-week stay in Seoul to enjoy the autumn colors of the capital: hiking along the Great Wall of Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul Forest, Olympic Park, Maeheon Citizens' Forest (former Yanghae Citizens' Forest), Deoksugung Stone Wall Path and Myeongnyungdang Pavilion (Sungkyunkwan University) renowned for their famous thousand-euro trees. Around Seoul: Hwadam Forest in Gwangju, Namiseom Island in Chuncheon, Gangcheonseom Island in Yeoju, Calm Morning Park in Gapyeong and Mount Bukhansan National Park including Bibong Peak Nature Reserve for wildlife watching and panoramic views of Seoul

Gangwon-Do region > one-month stay from mid-November to mid-December
• Sea Train: head to the East Coast aboard the Sea Train from Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul to Jeongdongjin Station with a seaside trip and panoramic seats
• discovery of Northeast Korea with walks and photography under the seasonal foliage, notably in Seorakasan National Park, Hongcheon Ginkgo Forest, Wondaeri Birch Forest & Bimil Park in Inje while visiting more or less hidden temples such as Baekdamsa, to try to understand the history and culture religious of Korea
• Hajodae peninsula for the beginning of winter and the first snows with visits such as the Osan-ri Prehistory Museum and hiking in the Odaesan National Park

• visit Gangneung, a coastal city with a tasting of seafood specialties
• take the A-train which makes a loop in the canton of Jeongseon, in the heart of the province of Gangwon-do
• practice winter sports (notably skiing) on the Olympic sites of Pyeongchang which hosted the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games including Yongpyong Resort and Alpensia Resort internationally recognized
• participate in the Pyeongchang Trout Ice Fishing Festival to practice a traditional winter sport in a relaxed atmosphere: trout fishing on ice and enjoy the range of activities offered (various ice shows and major fishing competitions) - starts around December 22 > return to Seoul after this event

• temple Stay • meditation and serenity during a comforting and introspective activity by immersing oneself in the monastic life - meditation and prayer + learning with the monks > experience which particularly interests me

Mid-December to mid-January > Seoul, winter festivals & departure for a trip to Japan
Second visit of Seoul which is discovered in its white clothes with its districts and places of interest: Incheon, Myeongdong, Itaewon, Gangnam, Insadong, Seoul Tower, Gyeonggi-do, as well as the different palaces (with the royal pass) such as: Gyeongbokgung Royal Residence Palace, Changdeokgung Palace with its secret garden, Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace and Gyeonghuigung Palace which particularly interests me
- visit of the cultural district of the port and the Chinatown of Incheon as well as other destinations and visits around the capital such as the DMZ or the Gangwondo region in the east, via the train as soon as possible
• discovery of the local cuisine and street food of the different districts and places with the aim of realizing the ultimate guide for my blog (personal or professional) and to discover local or exciting atmospheres
• enjoy the end-of-year festivities in the capital:
- Seoul Lantern Festival: admire traditional Korean paper lanterns (Hanji) along the Cheonggyecheon River (installations inspired by folk or contemporary visuals)
- Seoul Light Festival: projections of light creations at Seoul Plaza & Gwanghwamun Square with celebrations and the addition of a Christmas market where you can explore these stands full of unique craft products and seasonal gourmet delights
- Bosingak Bell Ringing Festival for the new year with the Bosingak bell ringing ceremony in Jongno at midnight before going to wait for the sunrise at Haneul Park

• Yeongdong Dried Persimmon Festival in mid-January: taste delicious persimmons in all their forms
• Uljin Snow Crab Festival in Gyeongsangbuk-do province: taste crabs Korean snow (iconic local specialty) + at the Hupo port of Uljin get up early to watch the sunrise from a boat
• tasting of traditional Korean alcohols
• January 20: departure for Japan (study railway trip)

February > travel outside South Korea > stay from January 20 to February 28 (2027) in Japan for a first winter discovery of this neighboring country of South Korea.

March > end of winter and spring blooms
• taste seasonal foods and fruits such as jukkumi (small octopus, emblematic seafood of spring) to be enjoyed in several ways (Shabu-shabu, stir-fried, stewed, grilled...) and strawberries > vegetable and plant season
• return to Seoul for the first week of March to commemorate Independence Movement Day
• Gurye Sansuyu Festival 구례 산수유꽃축제 > celebrates the flowering of sansuyu trees in Gurye. Understand the role of these flowers used in traditional oriental medicine and taste the products made from them = tea, alcohol and food to be enjoyed on site, with performances of music, traditional dances, fireworks...
• in the region, enjoy the famous hot springs of Jirisan Mountain to relax and unwind.

• cross the valleys of the Baekdudaegan mountain range aboard the V-train. It is connected to the O-Train which connects Seoul Station to Jecheon Station.

• DMZ train also known as the peace train, transports tourists and visitors from Seoul to the stations of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) for a one or two-day rail excursion > memory work
• July 23: departure for a trip to Japan with my sister in preparation for her studies in the country (ICN > KIX flight)

August > trip to Japan until August 29 then direct return in France or South Korea for a few days before returning to Europe to continue my studies in Tourism

I want to take advantage of my trip to meet new people and thus better understand the rich Korean culture and its many facets. I downloaded the "VISITKOREA" application to be able to find even more places to visit during my stay, I also follow local creators (like Sol Life) for a more concrete vision of the country. I want - as a rail lover - to discover South Korea through its trains like no other for a slower pace, the express buses from Busan and Seoul known for being comfortable and close to an airline business class are also a solution for some more intimate destinations.
I am therefore making this request to better understand and study Korean culture and in particular its cinema, which brings new aesthetic and thematic proposals (Park Chan-wook (one of my favourite directors), Bong Joon-ho and auteur cinema in particular) and its literature, a reflection of a country in constant evolution (Hwang Sok-yong, Han Kang (Nobel Prize for Literature 2024) in particular).
